Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone had a part number and or supplier for the plugs to fill the holes for the air injection tubes on the exhaust ports of the heads? Does IH only sell these? I have been to napa and three other "suppliers" in anchorage and I cannot find ones that fit.
Thanks for any help on this.
1972 392

read some of the older posts and sort of found my answer, however if I go to lowes or home depot, (only places I didnt go to) what exactly should I ask for from the salesmen?

I perform this same operation on a regular basis, including an a.I.r. Removal on my personal rig just three days ago.

I use 1/2"x20tpi (thread pitch) cup-point set screws, 1/2" in length though they can be any length you can find. In fastener-speak, that is what we call a "fine" thread. The cup point fits the injection tube hole inside the port perfectly.

The original set screw supplied through IH service parts distribution back in the day was the same setscrew only it had what we refer to as a "dog point".

Order your set screws from here http://www.mcmaster.com[/url].
Ask them to send you a catalog with your order. Put it in the bathroom next to the crapper and read it every day. It contains a wealth of information. And knowledge keeps your truck running, dude.

Thanks for the patience with all this, I can tear apart a radio and fix most things electronic, however engines is not my strong point, trying to rebuild this 392, pretty much on my own, only place I am getting help is from this forum and a couple of guys at the auto skills center on base. I have recently put the cam, crank, new bearings all around into the engine and am starting rebuild on the heads now. After reading all of mr. Maybens the chunk thread it sounds like he has the same engine in his chunk as I will end up with in my Scout II I am working on. Minus the 30 over bore. On that note, I was very interested in his carb problems he was having, looks like I have a 4150 carb on hand, however does IH only have a rebuild kit for it and if so, what did you end up using on your chunk carb.....jets, power valves size and such?
Thanks again for the help.

Okay, lowes had the plugs, at least 4 of them, asked about ordering some more....guy tells me they have a contractor who comes in once every two weeks to check on the bins and he fills them...go figure. He couldnt tell me the last time the guy was in or when he would be back..go figure again. Well back to tearing apart valve train components, trying to find one good set out of the pile of valve crap I have.

Yep, both lowe's and home depot only "talk" hardware, they ain't got shit! They might have one of something inna baggie and the rest of 'em are scattered through all those bins that the hardware rep that comes around every two weeks is supposed to "face" as part of his job. Yeah...you can bet on that.

I bought four sets of eight last week at my local Mom and pop fastener supply, I've already used/sold three sets!

You are in anchorage...last time I was up I found a huge hardware/auto parts/mill/logging/industrial supply there on the main drag going north towards where all the big box stores are. Should be these folks:

contact information : welcome to alaska industrial hardware inc!, web store

I bought some shackles and chain grabs there that even my local logging supply didn't carry. I know they would have this stuff! And there has to be a plain old fastener supply there also.

And then there are these folks:

fasteners & fire equipment inc.

As well as the local fastenal outlet.

The 4150 carb that you have (and I recommended that you use) is near identical to the one I built for my 392 a few weeks ago. Recovered it from a scrap pile of carb cores a friend was tossing out which was a huge lucky break as I was ready to snake another new 80457. I hope to be able to finalize the setup numbers later this coming week when I can get it back in the shop, I think its still a bit too fat all around so I need to hook it up to the exhaust gas analyzer this time and get it right...but even at that, the fuel economy for this rig is incredible in my world, a solid 12mpg with the built motor, haven't done a real test yet since getting the ignition lined out. Even the idle quality provided by that cam is vastly improved but it still sounds "healthy" for cruuzin' on main st.

Sounds good, I stopped by the aih store, they had a couple of pipe plugs, that was it, lots of other cool tools and gizmo's I had no idea what they did, but I wanted them anyways, but not alot in the way of small hardware, maybe they are downsizing inventory or some shit. I ordred some from the web site dealbreaker put up. Cant wait to hear what you end up with on the carb.
