Mystery Component

Hello,

I have a 1977 Scout traveler, 4x4, auto with a 345, that to the best of knowledge (or at least to the untrained Scout eye) looks bone stock. The truck has sat for the last 4 years. Like an idiot, I threw a set of jumper cables on it, spayed some either and it ran like a top (on either that is). I know this was a bad idea, but I wanted to hear it at least burp before putting in the $ and effort of towing it home.

Since then, I’ve dropped the gas tank, did the old gravel + old gas swirl it around trick to clean it out. Have a new sending unit / pickup, changed all the fuel lines, added a pre fuel pump filter and changed the post fuel pump filter and rebuilt the carb per a thread on this site. Drained the tranny fluid and changed the filter. Changed engine coolant and oil.

Before I try to start it again I noticed after I ran it the first time a sliver box on the firewall that seems to have given up the ghost / oozing out of the back of it.

My question is, what is it and can I just take it off and cap the lines? I know I have to get a service manual, it’s next on my list once I get it running well.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome steve! Congrats on the new money sucking void. I use that terminology with utmost endearment. You've done well in tackling a number of the neglected items necessary when reviving a dead dog. The item in question is a deceleration module. Its strictly an emissions component. You can remove and discard as your engine will run just fine without it. Be sure to cap/plug the vacuum lines. Hopefully this Scout is not still subject to periodic smog certification including under-hood visual inspections where you live. That would be the only reason to stress over finding a replacement, if that part even exists. There's no performance or fuel economy benefit to be realized from having that doo-Dad in place.

Thanks scoutboy, I thought it might be something "smog" related. No underhood inspections for a vehicle this old in ct, so removal should not be a problem.

Thanks again!

Double thanks from me too, scoutboy!!!! I was wondering about the same component!!! I'm almost ready to pull the 304 out of my 78 sii and will be replacing it with a fresh 1975 392!!! One less thing to fool with!!!!

You're welcome guys. Codeman - at the risk of preaching to the choir, be sure to retain the required sii engine components from the 304 to make the 392 "Scout compliant". You'll like the added grunt from the big bore mill!:yesnod:

Yeah, man - I'm on it!!! The 392 was built by an IH dealership mechanic of 43 years!!! It's as good or better than new!! 1975 casting. He built it 11 years ago to put in a t-all to do truck pulls with. Never been installed/started!! Got a nice sig erson cam in it and all new internals. I'll take proper steps to prime and such before I crank it. Also swappin out the 727 for a t-19!!! Can't wait to grab me some gears!!!! I'll begin posting pix soon. I'm in the process of making my woodworking shop a truck building shop!?!?!?!??! Just got the Scout in it before the holidays. Already starting to "break 'er down"!! More to come!
