My first Scout II

Hey everybody! Been looking for a Scout for a few months now and I just pulled the trigger on a 1972 Scout II. I'm planning on doing a lot of work on it over the next fall and winter, but until then I just want to keep it in shape to hit a trail or two. I think I May have made a typical man mistake, a 'manstake' if you will. I bought it because it was all in all pretty good shape, and had a lot of the bells and whistles I was looking for.

Pros:
*winch (it's a warn, not sure the exact model)
*air compressor built in
*custom front bumper with flood lamps
*engine rebuilt 33k ago
*B&M shifter (automatic)

the stuff I should have paid more attention to:
*lots of holes from where bolt ons used to be
*lugs for the wheels cross threaded
*only the speedo and alternator gauge work (fuel gauge, temp guage, oil gauge, gear select...none of it works)
*all of those "goodies" I was so excited about are overloading the battery and making it difficult to start. It really should be on a dual battery set up...May have issues with the starter motor.

I've already taken it to a shop to take care of the cross threaded lugs and make sure there are no glaring safety concerns before I drive it to my garage a little further south, and the holes I can take care of once I put it in storage for the winter. My big concerns right now are getting those gauges working (hopefull making sure I don't have an electrical fire in the process), getting it to start easier and just an all around check list so I can get a trip or two in before summer is over. Any tech advice or links are greatly appreciated!

Moved to a more appropriate forum. I'm sure one of our tech moderators or long time members will chime in shortly to help lend a hand with some advice.

If...the wiring and connectors for the instruments are ok, then all the oem instruments you describe are powered from a "constant voltage regulator" (cvr) pod mounted on the circuit board for the temperature/oil pressure cluster. Those can die at any time. Also the connections for the cvr can be dirty.

Take some time to search and read through many threads posted regarding this same subject in the "electrical tech" sub-forum. Key word to use for search..."cvr".

For assistance in identifying vehicle components that May be present, along with any engine-related issues, we need pics of the subject matter. Every one of these vehicles is somewhat different in composition after 35 years!

None of the additional electrical loads you describe impact the electrical system at all if they are not turned on! And ya don't use the winch at the same time you are running the starter!

So...no doubt there are charging system issues to work through, along with a battery that must be load-tested and determined to either be good or need s to be replaced with a suitable battery for the anticipated load requirements. Again, we've covered nearly every conceivable electrical/charging system issue in depth in threads in the sub-forums.

Thanks for the info. Sorry about posting in the wrong place...I'll get to reading up on this "cvr" issue and hopefully I can find a cheap fix.
