My first IH project-scout 80

I got this 61 Scout 80 from a gentleman in illinois. Anyway the engine has had some work, as have the floor pans. Some pop riveted panels have been added, unfortunately. The bed floor is rusting where the frame runs under it. One shock mount has rusted out and fallen off the frame. The underside needs some work and will probably need to be totally rebuilt. Anyway I'm looking to do a total frame off restoration.

Ty sir, I have a feeling that I'm quickly becoming unhealthily obsessed with this thing. I love the nostalgia and ruggedness of the old girl, but after driving it on a modern highway.... A 4bt transplant is looking more and more likely. I just hate to do that to a piece of history... :icon_gonk:

Agreed, them 4 poppers gas pigs are gutless wonders. Some guys love em and have success for certain mods that works for their needs. I have seen a few IH finatics do a v8 swap into the 80 models.

As a side note, if you aint careful, these ole iron heavies have a tendency to breed on their own. These aren't race speed demons. They were built as work horses. I wouldn't expect these IH motors to rev up much past 3 or 4 k on the rpm scale.

Yeah the 4.9 cummins 4bt really looks like a good fit. I know I will have to choose a tranny, transfer case, ect ect.
I don't know what modifications will be necessary to make the conversion but that's part of why I joined this site :).

If anyone has information, a link, or advise that May help get me pointed in the right direction please share your wisdom.

Im a 4 banger guy. I think ring and pinon swaps and a certain weber upgrade will take your farther for cheaper. Hope to see her wheelin soon

cant wait to see the progress. I still think an early 196 would give you more power than youd ever need. Ive never ran out.

If I keep the 152 then yeah a ring and pinion swap will have to happen. I'm so far from a decision at this point its pathetic. Ive had the thing since November, and I'm still torn between keeping it all original(which would be incredibly easy considering its all intact and runs fine), or modernizing it and using it as a (comfortable) daily driver.

Ill post pics of the bead blasting and rebuilding of the frame once we get started. Shes going back to her original IH red paint. Also looking for the original decals if anyone has a hookup:)

Couple places make repops of the decals. Any good sign shop can make them as well.

To scooters point made here "I wouldn't expect these IH motors to rev up much past 3 or 4 k on the rpm scale."

lets face it. You wont rev any diesels that high either :hand:

you have a great example of a vintage baby Scout. Very cool looking rig

Seriously though, my 63 has a 196 with a weber 32/36, 4.88 gears, and on 31's for now. At 55mph I'm rolling 3200rpm. It's not a speed demon but its not slow either and I get around 18mpg. It's noisy and it drives like a tractor, but I have some plans for it. It is a blast to drive

Alright after a long time hibernating under a tarp the process has begun. I have made the decision to do a frame off restoration. No mods no nothing. Will have pics tomorrow.
