My 1980 Scout II diesel

Hello everyone. Here's my story about a Scout.

I purchased a Scout from a craigslist add about a year ago. I was looking for some Scout axles for my Jeep and happened across it. People had been bugging me about my Jeep for a long time and wanting to buy it so I put it back together and sold it to build this.

It is a 1980 Scout II with the sd33t, t19, Dana 300 sitting at 116k on the odometer.
The Scout stayed like this for a couple months while I made a plan and sold my Jeep. After I did some research and knew what I wanted I began to purchase and add parts. So far the parts list goes as follows:

method wheels with 285/72/16 tread wright tires
4" rc lift with new extended brake lines
all new bearings in the front and rear axle
front aussie locker
rear mini spool
logansmetals4x4.com front bumper
home made rear bumper
warn 8k winch in front
warn premium lockouts
all new brakes front/rear
aluminum radiator w/ all new hoses
coolant filter
new heater hoses and shutoff valve
spin on fuel filter
new starter
new battery
re-painted metal portions of the dash
new dash pad
new turn signal switch
poly engine mounts
all new u-joints in d-shafts and axles
2.5" exhaust from the turbo back, no muffler, some whistle
better factory pillow top buckets
temp guage
pyrometer
new master cylinder
longer wheel studs
added factory skid plate
cobra cb w/ external speaker and pa
re-painted grille , metal grille insert instead of the factory plastic
kenwood stereo
custom made revolver cylinder shift knob
center console made into speaker box with 2 speakers
full size spare
blocked off egr

future plans include new body bushings and cleaning up the under side with some new floor pieces, a new rear bumper, 4 wheel disc brakes, rock sliders, and new intake to flow more air etc... This is what it looks like today. I welcome any feedback and ideas. Thanks

Sounds like you have experience with j@#ps (we don't throw that word around much here, we are the redheaded children of the 4x4 world), that will be a big help, and IH america has all of the upgrades you are looking for. I do have lots of pictures concerning the upgrades I've done. If there is something specific you want to see just let me know. I know Jeep is a bad word in an IH group and likewise but the group I run with has a little of everything.

No, not really a bad word, we just get sore because everything is, Jeep, Jeep, Jeep. Folks tend to forget that scouts outsold the Jeep in its day, but that's what happens when you disappear from the market. It's even worse on the Bronco web sites. They seem to think they invented the sport utility!

We all love pictures of everything, but especially me. I'm stuck on phone watch in afghanistan. I need my eye candy!

I have had this set on 2 different vehicles. First they were on a 3/4 ton truck. I don't find them to be very noisy at all and they work very well off road on rocks and recently here at home in the snow. Before these I ran some tsl boggers on a rig and they aren't quite as good as those off road but at 1/4 of the cost I have no complaints.

This is what happens when a usa made precision super strength axle joint gives up. The funny thing is that I never heard or felt anything. That u-joint was 2 months old and still had clean grease in it when I removed the pieces.

And when engine mounts are 30 years old and the rubber starts to seperate.

Thanks, there is nothing perfect about it but I like the patina. If it was perfect I wouldn't want to drive it or wheel it. It has some of the usual rust but for southern illinois it is cherry.

Todd the pictures look great. I sure miss that part of the world! As a former michigander I will attest that she is indeed cherry for that part of the country!

I think the patina is great too, but I still cringed at a couple of those pics. I guess that comes from coming up on the dealership side of the car business. (don't scratch it, don't scratch it. You have to put it back on the lot and sell it on Monday) I don't think I will ever be a hard core off roader!

On our runs we normally try not to get into body damage territory but it happens once in a while. Normally it isn't anything major but once in a while the trail that was easy last time is hard right now and you can't really turn back. That happened this year at windrock with one of the guys in the group in his yellow tj. We had to do some creative winching to get him out of a funny spot. He did not end up with a single scratch from this. We winched him to the right in this pic and I had him turn into the bank and start to straddle the gap some. That rig is fully locked and could have driven it but couldn't stay out of the rock/dirt bank on the passenger side.

I guess this is getting a little off topic so here is a pic of the engine compartment when I was working on the radiator/coolant filter/hoses/block heater.

And to make up for the Jeep picture here is one of a different trip we took right here at home in a small sandy spot (not common in our area at a low water crossing. The truck belongs to a buddy of mine. 67 3/4 ton 4x4. He did all the work including swapping it over to 4x4 with original IH parts. This truck had a 304 and he swapped it to an inline 6 because he liked them better. It runs like a sewing maching and he will drive it anywhere.
