Mufflers & Equalizer

I'm going to pose a question that has little chance of generating a consensus answer, but I'm still curious to know yawl's opinions on the subject. The vehicle in question is hooty in my sig section. It has factory dual exhaust with aftermarket glasspacks. They were on it when I bought it, and they don't have much left to give. I've heard flowmasters on an IH 345 and they sound pretty bad azz, but I don't think I want that much noise all the time. I think I'd rather keep it fairly mellow from idle up thu @ 2500 with it approaching a dull roar anywhere above that engine speed. I know the marketing hype on most name brand products is just that...hype. In most cases you wind up spending a lot of $$ for a flashy logo and graphics package, but not much else. Three brands that come to mind right away are of course, flowmaster, dynomax, and magnaflow. What little research I've done in this arean has led me to consider magnaflow as the best of that group for my needs. Finally my question:
are there any lesser known brands that would meet or exceed the performance of those big boys while still offering a lifetime warranty and do it all for less dinero?
Also, I'd like to know the real skinny on whether an equalizer, or cross-over pipe really makes enough of a difference to justify the installation.
Or would I be better off ditching the dual setup and going to a larger single outlet with one good muffler? Let 'er rip fullers! This orta be gud!

I am sold on the dynomax mufflers and systems. I ran a dynomax cat back system on my durango for 5 years and it sounded and performed as well the day I sold the truck as the day I put it on. I also have the dynomax x-flow muffler on my ¾ ton 6.0ltr suburban and love it. It gives a nice throaty sound without the pop of a lesser muffler. The ¾ ton suburbans come from the factory with 2 ¾” dual exhaust all the way to the muffler then they go into one muffler and actually come out dual 3” then into a single pipe. So I used the dynomax as a sort of home build cat back system and retained the factory cats and pipe as it is a high flow system anyway the only restriction is the muffler. So far it seems to allow flow much better. It has a built in equalizer in it construction. I am also running dynomax mufflers on the Scout I am building. It runs a 304sv with stans headers and is running 2 ½” pipe from the headers back. I put an x pipe in that system. I have no on road results for that yet but absolutely love the sound. It iseems to flow really well. I do have flowmaster stage 2’s on my 75 pickup, just had that system rebuild around the mufflers, all new 2 ¼ pipe. I regret not putting an x or h pipe in but it was a budget thing. The mufflers have been in this truck for about 10 years and they also show no signs of rust or burn through and sound fantastic. Overall I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. Yes you can buy lesser mufflers but like anything else you May have to put 2 or 3 sets on in the time 1 set of quality mufflers will last. As far as x and h pipes, they are slightly different in how they work. The x pipe is supposed to create a vacuum of sorts and help the exhaust propel itself out of the system thus giving it a higher flow rate allowing the motor to breathe better. The h pipe is supposed to allow for a pressure release by balancing the exhaust in the pipes, thus giving it a higher flow rate.

I have a set of factory replacement exhaust pipes from Scout connection and a set of flowmaster 50 series mufflers on my terra. I'm happy with the sound, just a little too loud. I've got 40 series 2 chambers on my mustang and the only reason they are not loud enough to wake the neighbors is the turbo acts as a pre-muffler to quite things down.

As for the crossover or x-pipe, don't know. I've heard mixed reviews.

So check it out, this is just a crappy cell phone video, I was alone, so no one could rev the motor with me near the tailpipes but you still get a idea of the way it sounds. This proves 2 things, one I am making progress on my Scout and two dynomax mufflers sound bad ass.

Jeff turned me on to this after Darren set one up:

dynomax :: mufflers :: ultra flo x

That's goin' on the beater as soon as momma let's me keep one o' them welfare checks. Solves the problem of "space". My current setup is up and over the crossmembers, the oldskool glasspaks are tucked up real high, but I'm tired of it soundin' like the '60's rides! Built about 8 years ago by a race exhaust shop down in people's republik and now rotted out.

Then I later added a crossover/h pipe which did nothing except make it sound like shit. So then I cut that out and now it's two 4 bangers side-by-side.

This xpipe muffler deal should be the schnizz though. And both tail pipes are gonna siameze out the azzend right behind the driver side rear where I can see the oil smoke as a reminder tha motor is tired. They can tuck up real high just like the system is now and then I can hang the spare underneath again!

That flo-x does look like a purdee slick deal. Jegs and summit has 'em fer a hunert and turdy-tree cabbage leaves. So the real expense then wud be all the new tubing from front tuh back. That's where a fuller is gunna need a fat billfold.
