Wow, you saw that quickly. Right after I posted the link, I went back to the other forum and started reading that excerpt again and thought, "I just read this recently somewhere else..." so I searched this forum for some of the content and realized you'd put it in the first post! I felt kind of dumb putting in mine so I edited it out.
But yeah, lots of opinions! And and a little conflicting information. I didn't want to keep asking you about your competitor's products; I don't think it's fair to put you that an awkward position. But I May as well say that I wrote to to redline about their oils' zddp content, since they say nothing about it on their web site. (btw, I was asking them because redline's available at several stores in the area, though at $10-11/qt.)
a rep of theirs wrote me back:
"our oils still maintain good levels of zddp for good protection of flat tappet cams and lifters. Our motor oils contain 1200 ppm phosphorus, along with sulphur the critical elements for flat tappet cam protection.
Oils submitted for sm certification are required to have between 600 and 800 ppm phosphorus, a cj-4 oil less than 1200 ppm."
It sound great, but I eventually found a link to the spec sheet for their oils on their site, and it lists every one of their motor oils as meeting sm/something. Their 15w40 is "sm/sg/cf cj-4/ci-4". This kind of contradiction stymies me. Gotta remember to ask Jeff about shipping cost. I'm sure your oil comes in at less than redline bought locally anyway.
