1977 ss2 (32k miles) with 345 and 2 previous owners and who knows what brand was used over the past 35plus years..how well does swepco tolerate previous oils..ive always tried to never change from the brand I currently started with but in the case of old rigs who knows...thanks..god speed

ps:I am thinking shell rotella diesel oil (15w/40) which from what I can gather has a high zinc content..or should I buy an additional zinc additive either the swepco additivie IHOnly sales or some off the shelf brand locally?

Ps:I would still like to know some thoughts on the rotella but..to be safe I will order what the IH only guys recommend after I give them a phone call..plus I need to know shipping back to st louis and well how much swepco (727) transmission fluid I will need.(how many quarts of oil?... Mr mayben I thinks says need 7 quarts????)...also will the swepco ps fluid work for my 1977?..and how much of that do I need???...I am having my mechanic flush every fluid on this truck and want to do it right...hopefully all this tech stuff is not in the wrong forum..thanks..god speed

Good questions.....

Most of these have already been covered in previous posts, but to make it short.... Swepco 306 - 15w40 has more additives in it than the rotella you mentioned, especially the newer rotella. It is a highly fortified oil with plenty of zddp, and has an excellent detergency to it. Not knowing the prevous oil shouldn't make a lot of difference, except for the fact if regular maintenance (oil changes) were performed. If there is sludge and varnish in the engine, or if the rings are stuck, the detergency of the 306 will get to work on it. If your oil consumption goes up, it is a sign that is the case, and it should go back down again to where it was, or even below once the rings re-seat themselves, which is usually about 2-3 oil changes. Once you get to the point that you do not have a consumption problem, you should be able to go 5,000 miles between oil drain and filter intervals.

The swepco 714-20 atf will work well in the transmission, I don't know what the total amount you need, but another tech or Jeff at ihon will be able to do so. If your power steering fluid is listed seperately, then the 715 product will work just fine, if it calls for atf, you can also use the 714, but once again, it is a high detergent oil and if you have any seals which are marginal, it might create a leak there..... Otherwise, no problem.

Thanks for your post...

Dick
