I recently replaced the damaged windshield frame and glass on hooty with a very nice used donor piece. The replacement glass had a metal rv mirror button adhesed firmly in place. This button was mounted too low for my liking and was also the wrong size for my factory original mirror with integrated map/courtesy lights (yeah that's bullshit, but so what? It sounded good!). I know removing these buttons can sometimes be a ticklish prospect as windshield damage can easily occur. Some pro glass places won't even touch them. So here's what I did to successfully remove this bugger:
I took one large locking adjustable pliars, better known as a vice-grip and attached it very loosely to the protruding edge of the button, just tight enough that it would defy gravity. Then I took my butane pencil torch and focused the flame on the metal button for five to ten seconds max. Don't apply flame directly to the glass! It took two applications with a short rest in between before the adhesive began to turn gooey allowing me to simply rotate the pliars with the slightest of force. The button came off easy as you please. No grunting, or groaning involved and best of all, no damage to my new glass! Now all that's left is a thorough clean and prep of the surface before I attach the proper button to the glass. I love it when a plan comes together.
