metallic flakes in T-19 oil

Any else get a lot of metallic looking flakes when they drain/change oil in their t-19?
I seemed to have more metallic looking flakes then normal this morning,

also if any one needs a work out, laying on your back using a harbor freight hand pump on a gallon of swepco gear oil that sat out side in 33 degree weather all night will give you the burn your looking for.
 
Metallic flakes are a bad sign. It means you have either a bearing in the process of failing or with extreme wear. I'd check the inside of the transmission and scope it out before it lays down on you somewhere.

Another thought, check the flakes with a magnet, if they stick it May be gear material or roller bearings, if not then bushings.

Ok thanks rob. They were very very tinny.
About 10 years ago the 4th to 3rd gear syncro quit working.

There are rebuild kits for this transmission right?

If a bearing goes out would I know it? Lots of noise?
 
Depending on the type of failure, yes, there will be noise as it's going out. My suggestion would be to go ahead and look inside the transmission. If the flakes are gold colored then it's probably brass which means a bushing, if silver then a roller bearing.

Best way to look in there is through the top cover correct?

Ill do that and see if I can see anything. Never looked at one so I wont know much, unless something is trashed.

It’s a 1977 and has never been opened up and probably has 400k miles on it, so it has been a heck of a tranny

Glad to help, I'd pull the top off and I believe there is a side cover on that tranny. If you can stick your hand in the sump the see if there is any sludge or particles you can feel. If it's got 400k miles I'd say it needs a rebuild.
