What were the louvers in the dash of a Scout 80 for?

Idiot po of mine decided to cut them out. And I'm trying to decide if I want them back or just ignore them.
 
Kinda what I figured, thanks..

Might be a good spot for a ham radio speaker. Other than that, I would not have much use for it.
