Loud click?

Thank you to everyone so far who is help me with my threads. I'm resurrecting a 78 Scout two. 345 v8 auto trans got it running this weekend pretty well set timing adjust carburetor got rid of vacuum leaks etc. When I started it yesterday I started to hear a loud clicking/ticking/chirp from top passenger side of engine obvious choice was a lifter but it's very loud for a lifter. Today I double checked everything try to reduce the timing a little bit nothing seem to help. Used a stethoscope and listen to different points on the engine and that did not pick it up either.... It is intermittent when the car is a neutral and at idle. It starts up when in gear and a load put on the engine. It does it as engine revs up under load just like a lifter would. Any suggestions are helpful

Tracing engine noises to their true source is often a tricky prospect. Recording the noise and posting a link to a youtube video is sometimes helpful.
Has the engine and transmission been separated recently, or has the torque converter been separated from the flex plate? I ask because I've experienced a rotational noise that turned out to be the result of one or more of my converter to flex plate bolts being loose. Once all were properly tightened, the noise magically disappeared forever. This is just a complete shot in the dark without hearing your noise and I'm not suggesting that it is the cause of the noise in your case, but it is a possibility that might be worth looking into.

Could it be an exhaust leak? The intake has exhaust passages in it with welch plugs to fill the casting holes. I have seen them corrode and leak causing a ticking noise like an exhaust leak.

Does it have a smog pump? There are tubes that extend into the exhaust port and if they are eroded can make a loud chirp.
