Looking for Cooling System Information

Have a 79' Scout II that I want to do a coolant flush on. It is a 345 with a factory a/c setup.

1. What is the proper type of coolant to use?
2. What is the capacity of the system?
3. This is more of a problem than a standard question. I have a small coolant leak that appears to be coming from near the water pump. Anyone know how big of a deal it is to change the water pump gasket?

Any information is appreciated.

Thanks!!

1. Prestone green coolant, 50/50 mix.
2. 20 quarts, possibly a quart or so more due to a/c.
3. Remove fan (4 bolts), remove water pump (4 bolts).

Other than the petcock on the bottom of the radiator, there is an 1/8" pipe plug on each side of the block to drain each cylinder bank. Good luck removing these unless you want to drill them out. Now would be a good time to do a through cooling system flush too.

Usually a water pump will leak from the bearing, first test is to wiggle the fan blade and see if/how much the shaft moves. There are 2 types of water pumps on scouts the "big nut" which is left hand threaded and the 4 bolt type. This describes how the fan/fan clutch is attached.

It has 36,000 miles on it so I'm not too worried about parts being frozen so I could most likely remove the plugs easily. Fan is totally solid is there a gasket that that May have gone bad?

There is a seal on the water pump shaft. Most people replace the whole pump. If you mean the mean there is no wobble in the shaft, the seal still could be bad. Look for water dripping from the bottom of the fan pulley. If there is water there replace the pump.

Just spoke to my Dad in sutton ma yesterday, hope you're not out in the snow fixing this. You will find the block coolant drain plugs in the center of the block just above the oil pan. Don't assume your builder changed the plugs as they had the welsh plugs out to clean the block. If you really want to pull the plugs, be prepared with 2 new 1/8" pipe plugs, an 1/8" pipe plug tap and the correct size drill.

I think I just found it on the upper bypass hose, and no sadly I dont take advantage of my babies capabilities because it is too cherry to let the salt eat it

It's 36,000 original miles, nothing has ever really been changed out aside from the alternator which died randomly a few years back. Thank you for the help!!

My one other question while I'm on this cooling topic is weather or not my fan is supposed to spin freely while the truck is not running. Right now it spins by hand but with a fair amount of resistance. Just wondering if the bearings in the fan clutch May have gone bad or if the slight stiffness is the norm

Gorgeous Scout! The fan clutch sounds normal. It only locks up when the radiator is hot. I bet there are no other scouts in that condition in your area. Mine is a daily driver and ranch truck, but I try my best to keep in tip top shape.

Thanks, it's my baby!

Thanks for the info on the fan clutch, I just wasnt sure if it was supposed to spin like a fan on a modern car where you can just give it a flick and it spins easily

Having recently installed a new, thermal fan clutch, I've observed that the blade will spin by hand, but it is by no means a roulette wheel. There is felt resistance and movement stops almost immediately after the applied force ceases. By comparison, every well-experienced fan clutch I've spun has gone into pat sajak mode after finger contact has ceased. Cold engines in all cases.

All I can say is wow. In mass. ???? I wouldn't take it out either, unless it's straight to the snow and back with a thorough under washing . snow can be so much fun.
