Leaky 196

I could use a little help here. The lifter cover on my 196 is leaking. I've replaced it twice, so clearly I don't know what im doing. Can anyone give me some advice or tricks to seal this thing up. Oh, by the way it's a 196 in a 1967 Scout 800. Thanks for any help you can offer.

If it's been overtightened you'll need to knock the flange surfaces into shape before installation.

I straightened mine out, used hylomar on the new rubber seals, didn't over-tighten and haven't had any problems.

I have only found the cork gaskets. Could that be the problem? Where can you get the tappet cover in rubber? The first time I replaced the gasket I used hylomar. The second time I used permatex 1. The second time I checked the flatness of the mating surfaces just to be sure. Still leaks.

I think ihonlynorth has the rubber gaskets. You can call them to verify. I like them because they seem more durable.

I don't have a 4 banger, but if the oil return is similar to the sv's you May have an issue where partial blockage of the oil return path is causing higher than normal oil levels above the gasket.

I checked the oil return and it looks good. I guess I will see if I can get my hands on one of the rubber gaskets and give that a try.

here Is the item I was referring to which mentions the oil drainback hole cleaning. You probably can't tell just by looking.
