Kickdown adjustment on B.W auto

I have a 71 sii and since it is an 810 it has the b.w auto. The thing has shifted great for all 60,000 I have put on it. The only thing I don't like is the kick down, it won't kick down over 25mph when it has plenty of gear to do so. Anyone know of an adjustment? Thanks.

I know very little about those units, but one thing I do know is that the kd is vacuum actuated as opposed to being mechanical like the tf 727 found in later IH vehicles. I don't know if there is an adjustment. Logic dictates there must be one. Perhaps your modulator has been in some failure mode for the entire time you've owned it. Stay tuned for more definitve.

Ime, in the travelalls with the bw auto trans, the kick-down is a switch located in the floor under the gas pedal. It is adjustable.
I haven't seen a Scout II with the bw, but you can check there.

A Scout 810 uses a borg warner 11 series auto trans.

The electric kickdown switch under the throttle pedal is adjusted so that the "height" of the outer enclosure is 1.9" above the footboard. That height does not include that portion of the switch that actually moves when the pedal touches it.

The entire "adjustments" segment for this transmission is covered within the cts-2494-g segment of a cts-2304 service manual, about four pages of information total.

Ya I don't have a switch on the floor. I got this thing completely stock from the 2nd owner and it does not look like there ever was a switch. I have a trans shop around me and the guy that owns it is in his 50's and has been driving IH as long as he has been driving so I think I'll contact him. It could use a service anyway. It really is a great shifting trans other then the kickdown part and it has always been this way.

I have a bw in my pickup which come from a 66 1000-a pickup. I don't have a line set ticket on the 66, so I am unsure the exact model of my tranny. I have been told bw8 and bw12.

Anyway, I replaced my modulator valve because the diaphragm was leaking. My tranny uses a modulator with a built in electric solinoid. The kickdown switch is located under the gas pedal. The modulator valve also gets vacuum from the intake manifold. Most of the time, the tranny downshifts without the kickdown switch being actuated by the gas pedel. The vacuum, or rather lack of it, is all that is needed. The tranny downshifts when there is a drop in vacuum from the intake manifold on acceleration.

If you need one of these modulator valves, they are hard to find. I paid about $250 from blaser rambler, but the performance increase was well worth the price! Btw, theses trannys are very common in the ramblers of the late 50's and early 60's. The valves haven't been made in several decades according to blaser.

Do an ebay search on rambler modulator valve. You May get lucky. I found an exact one about two weeks later for $30. It is now my backup.

The shift point adjustment is made on my tranny by screwing the modulator in or out. Go one turn in or out, lock it down, then test drive. Do over until it shifts like you want it to.
