just bought a 64 travelette...now what?

Over the holiday I managed to sneak in some cl search time and came across a 64 travelette crew cab. Went out and checked it out couldnt believe how solid it was all things considered and the price, was, well, too amazing to pass on. So after a lot of back and forth and changes in plans (I got called back to work 500 miles away) I managed to get family to finish the purchase for me. I'm still having to drive back up to well north of sacramento to pick it up but cant wait to get started on it in a few weeks. I do have some questions and or need for parts... I need all 4 door glass and both front and rear bench seats. Also in the hunt for both front and rear gas tanks. :icon_rolleyes:

Nice looking truck!

I am not sure exactly what you mean when you say front and rear gas tank.

The driver side fender has no hole for the fuel fill so it most likely only had one tank that filled in the curb side front fender.

As far as seats are concerned, you should be able to make any seats out of a Ford/mopar/GM truck/crewcab/'burb to fit. In fact, a set of seats out of a modern truck with leather seat covers, bun warmers, and power adjustment make for a really nice upgrade. Upgrade to really new seats with built in 3-point belts and you would have some really nice seats. By the way, making modern seats fit your old 'binder not only will be more comfortable but a whole lot easier to find. Easier to find usually equals less expensive.

Side glass and rear glass is standard flat auto glass and should be available at any full service glass shop. You May want to opt with tinted while you are at it.

Windshields are available but they are not cheap.

I May be mistaken but since you have a screw lock hand throttle I think the round control knob to the left of the transmission tunnel that goes straight down most likely operated a pto.

Be aware the large 6-lug axles have brakes that use drums that are made of unobtainium. If you have enough $$$ they can be replaced. But if you end up with brake issues your best solution is to swap axles to modern GM/mopar axles with disc brakes. The swap will most likely cost less than a set of drums.

If you do end up swapping axles it would also be a good time to swap the master cylinder to a two circuit brake master cylinder as was found in the '67 and '68 model round body full size trucks.

Good luck and keep us posted as to your progress.

The truck currently has military issue (its an old army truck) 40 in mudders on it... They are def cool but way too old and need replaced. I have a set of 37" that are going on it. Going Dana 60 front and rear with new hangers and leaf packs for lift. Ive become all too familiar with unobtainium when it comes to IH trucks. Ive also got a 61 4wd and 72 Travelall. The 72 needs front rotors and calipers along with upper and lower ball joints. It's 2wd....good luck finding those, or more precisely affording them. The ball joints are more than what I paid for the whole truck.

As far as this project it will be used for light trailing and heading to the mountains. Eventually it will get a diesel of some sort. For right now I really just want to get it cleaned up and driveable.

Nice truck!
Just curious how you're going to get it to your home in long beach?
I have a transfer case waiting for me to pick up in the sacramento area along with a few small parts, and perhaps we could car pool or something. Just throwing it out there...
Yes, an awesome truck! I look forward to seeing it.

Steve,

I am headed back up the 19-20 of January. Thats a Saturday and coming back down Sunday. Id be more than happy to have you along for the ride.

I saw that truck on cl and talkied to the dude who owned it, I need another travelette like I need a hole in my head so I let it go....they are cool trucks!!!

I am a mile from exit #68 in wa state.

So if you are ever this far north you are welcome to drop in and say hi.

I honestly forgot about this. As life goes on, I wasn't paying attention the dates, and I was in kind of an incognito mode yesterday dealing with a whooped burned out old knee and a doctors appointment.

Steve
pm sent back.

After a very long, exhausting journey, the truck made it home to los angeles. Holy hell- got stuck, almost got ran off a cliff, broke one of my teeth (crown) off, had a tree branch fall and almost knock me out... Not to mention 28 hours of driving. :icon_eh::icon_down:

this thing has already given me more headaches than I know what to do with but cant wa mit to get started on her. On to the pics!

Overdrivesteve and scooter- sorry for the mix up. Totally my fault. Im going back north in March for work, lets plan something and work something out.

And yes, I drove the pch highway 1 from carmel all the way back down because we wanted to take the scenic route. Worst. Idea. Ever. But ive been in crazier situations.

Great t-ette. I have a '63 and hoping to pick up a '66 custom that's all original, one owner. It's a 3/4 ton, pwr steering, pwr brakes, ac, 304, 4 speed, hub caps still on, and has IH locking gas caps that I've never seen before. Maybe we can get some t-ettes together one day.
