Is my alternator bad?

Dad's 73

I was tinkering with my 73 today and noticed the positive terminal on the battery was a little loose. I pulled it off and the engine died. I was always taught that that indicated a dead alternator. However when I put the terminal back on and started the engine, I get movement toward charge on the gauge. I also put a test light on the alternator post and got a light. Is the Scout system different in some way? It's a bone stock and all original 345.

Remove it and have it tested for free at the parts house of your choice. That's the definitive way for determining whether its shot or not.
