Installation of 0-7448

Jeff: thanks for the prompt shipping of the carb and air cleaner. I am very satisfied with the transaction and I only have 1 question. Are there any install instructions or pics on here. I've been searching but haven't found what I'm looking for. Mainly the steel l shaped bracket location. Most likely it will be self explanatory when I start the installation. Again thank you Jeff for getting on this so quick. Danny

The "l" bracket is an alternative throttle return spring anchor. It's a universal part and should be mounted so that the dual throttle return springs are parallel as much as possible to the line of pull of the throttle cable system. Normally I put 'em under the retaining bolt for the thermostat housing water neck.

Some of the IH sv engines already have a sheetmetal spring anchor, some don't. Some also May have one located down lower under one of the intake manifold bolts. That anchor point should not be used as it's too much of an angle and and can nearly jam the throttle linkage wot!!!

This pic shows a driver-side "typical" install onna '74 design level sii that is pretty much virgin and also has an aftermarket cruise control added. It was not 100% complete when I took this pic series, the air cleaner is a temp item for testing only.

The owner also wanted to keep this setup as "stock" appearing as possible, even though this setup is not smog-legal.

This is the passenger side.

Seems like every one of these conversions I do myself is a bit different, that is because of previous mods under the hood, or design differences in the actual vehicle as they evolved over the years.

This is the prototype I set up when I originally developed this 2300 conversion kit several years ago. The carb itself was on a pinto-powered sandrail that had been in the weather for ten years and was rotten on the outside and even more rotten on the inside!

The throttle arm extension seen in this setup is an accessory item from Holley (chrysler part) I have to use sometimes on the autotrans applications, there are other ways of making the adaptation also.

This one was run on many different 2v engine apps in various IH vehicles, including a 401 amc in a '73 Travelall. That's how we figured out how to set up the throttle linkages, etc. For each vehicle application, we want this to be as much as possible a bolt-on deal with little or no fabrication on the part of the customer. For a Scout II, the biggest issue is the air cleaner because of the very limited hood clearance unless a body lift is installed.

Same for the jetting...Jeff and I did discuss the jetting for your particular setup and location!

Sweet michael, that's exactly what I was looking for. We have a guy we call at the mooney factory that has a brain like yours. To bad we can't download minds like the internet. Thank you very much, Danny

Yeah...but the guy at the mooney operation,...if he tells ya the wrong thang, you will fall outta the sky!

Worst thang that I can cause is a "stuck" in the middle of the bay bridge or the golden gate at rush hour!!

Let me reinforce (not just for you!)...the dual throttle return springs we do in these kits are a major safety item! One goes inside the other so that if one of the hook ends should ever break off, the other is there for a backup. If adjusted right, that does not increase the effort required on the accelerator pedal. You just have to use your own judgement and abilities to make the good return spring setup!

That coil spring you see around the throttle shaft behind the throttle arm is not a "return spring". That is a liability kinda condom for Holley! For many years none of the aftermarket replacement carbs used that spring...then all of a sudden they showed up in "new" production.

The manufacturer (Holley) knows they have no control regarding "how" the end user installs this stuff. And many folks simply do not think about the return spring deal and think that just happens by magic! You cannot believe the kind of lashups we see on this old stuff where they have nothing but maybe a heavy rubber band rigged in place! So Holley started installing that "safety" spring as a last resort to close the throttle butterflies (hopefully).

When working with these Holley 1904 carbs on the old scouts and pickups, the oem throttle controls are major piles of crap when new, so I always rig something that is more "modern" for a positive throttle return directly on the carb. That also makes a huge difference in being able to set the correct curb idle speed and mixtures!

If you have any questions or need more help with making the install be sure to post up in this thread, customer feedback is the primary way we have of knowing that custom stuff like this works in the best manner possible! And many times, we know the customer is fighting po virus so they really are at a loss when "their stuff" doesn't seem to look/work like "our stuff"!!

Thanks michael. On the airplanes there is no throttle return spring. I had a throttle cable slip out of the clamps and stuck on at half throttle. I had to use the mixture control to shut off the fuel to land, on and off and on and off and so on. Woke me up to say the least. One more question. I also bought the offset air filter from Jeff, I take it I have to install a fitting in it for the flame arrestor hose?

Yes, a fitting can be installed in the air cleaner base. Don't know which one you got (spectre?), but there should be a knockout on one side for the fitting, maybe one on each side since the offset base can't be simply turned 180*.
