IHGAMP buys a grocery getter…

Well after all the frustration trying to get a Scout 800 to be a daily driver. Gramp finally went out and bought a “modern” rig. ............

here it is.....................

1980 traveler turbo diesel with air & tilt and 40,000 miles on a fully rebuilt motor. Not bad for an old guy...

Yep! Ordered the patch panels from Jeff yesterday....

I really thought ihgramp was going to hold out for a 800, never thought he would cave.

I think this is just a quick fix. I don't think I'm off the hook for getting his 800s on the road...:icon_mrgreen:

Did I mention I bought it from the son of the original owner who bought it new from bisio? He says his Dad was a Scout nut and bought two diesels at the same time. After talking we discovered the other one was a gray one the SSII bought a year ago after it had passed through a couple of other owners (its gone now). I must admit I have never heard music come out of an IH radio until now.

I love that interior! If you decide to swap it out -- shine it up and put it on ebay.... You'd be surprised...

Nice find by the way.

Nice find, ken. Boy that engine looks awfully familiar. I have spent several hours hanging over the fenders of carl's, with more to come. Funny thing-seems like all these rigs are missing the ac belt.

That belt thing just about killed the deal. The po took it off for "more power". My first thought was if the diesel can't run the ac why would I want to drive it. I would rather be comfortable and enjoy the ride than have "more power". As long as it has enough power to make it to the Binder Bee and run the ac I will be happy. Sometimes I wonder about these kids. More power:dita: comfort:gringrin:

A cousin of mine has an isuzu I-Mark (Chevy chevette) with the diesel/5-speed.

When the a/c pump cycles, you have to drop a gear. I am thinking a traveler diesel with a/c will have the same problem.

I agree with gramps, a/c is worth taking five minutes longer to get somewhere.

Mark, that I-Mark was marketed under the GM banner as a "spectrum" (the geo brand that GM bs'd the world with way back when). The compressor in the diesel version "should be" a diesel kiki 15bh series five cylinder unit, those require about 4hp parasitic to operate at say a head pressure of 180psi. Those worked well for low rpm apps, but had shit for durability when used on higher rpm gas engine apps.

The isuzu diesels are great motors and super strong! But were never designed for drag race apps! And GM did their typical de-engineering of the isuzu v8 diesel motor that evolved into the duramax. I was there in the isuzu r&d arena when that was going on for the three years prior to the duramax coming to market. In my opinion (and the isuzu engineers), GM took a totally bulletproof, world class v8 diesel and turned it into a throwaway that met the target "costs" the beancounters established. My part of that project involved developing/testing (longterm durability testing) a ch compressor and mount for the engine package, which GM would then not purchase.

The bh series evolved into the current "ch" series which were scratch developed for r-134a apps and are much more durable.

I know...I was a field service engineer for diesel kiki back then! Corporate name change worldwide was to zexel in '92. Same supplier for the diesel injection system...same supplier for the sd series Nissan diesel schnizz.

The compressor on the traveler diesel is a "york" brand name (now known as cci) twin cylinder recip, those suk up about 7hp parasitic and vibrate like hell. But on the diesel app who cares???

So gramps...we can bring that a/c system to life, looks to be pretty much a virgin! Hopefully the compressor will still manually rotate and is not seized. But yawl also got spares...I May have one or two that still are decent also. Or we can convert it to a tama/zexel/seltec or sanden unit also. Jeff is working up conversion mounts now for the sanden/seltec compressor to bolt right to the york plate. These will be much nicer than the cradle adapters currently available in the aftermarket.

Mm you are a generation off.

The I-Mark to which I refer is the Chevy chevette with different trim--front engine, rear drive.

The spectrum is newer and front wheel drive.

As far as the engines are concerned, the isuzu diesel engines will run just about forever if you keep them cool, don't run them out of oil, change the oil occasionally, and keep the air filter clean. I think they are tougher than even the mercedes-benz diesels.

The po says the a/c works he just took the belt off for more power. So far everything else he has said has been true. We will check it out in 2-3 months. Right now I'm having too much fun driving it to worrry about fixin things.

I thought I would update this thread with some pictures of the recent status of the “grocery getter”
I decided that the rust in the belly rockers needed to be cut out. So I ordered new patch panels from Jeff and got to work.

The original plan was to weld in the new patches and just paint the belly. Well we all know how long “original” lasts around the ihcs.
next thing I knew we were doing a full paint job.:yikes:
