IHCS Scout Camper

Well after helping my brother-in-law joel (backcountry) with his camper. I decided that I needed to have one too. since the Scout version of the four wheel pop up camper was made in Colorado. I figured that would be the best chance of finding a good one. So I ran an ad on the denver Colorado cl. It got several responses. The best one came from gary billings. He goes by scoutman67 on the just internationals site. He had just bought a Scout II with a snow plow and one of these campers. He told me that the Scout was getting parted out but that the camper was in what he thought was pretty good shape. So I had him send some pictures and I ask him about some of the problem areas that we had discovered while working on joel’s.
After looking at the pictures and getting all my questions answered. I was able to tell that it was indeed the best of the bunch. So we struck a deal. :icon_cool:
I had a hard time this summer finding the time to go back a pick it up. So gary moved it to a friend of dads that lives in newcastle co. Which is where Dad and I picked it up. It was a 2350 round trip which we “iron manned” leaving ihcs at 4:30 on Friday and getting back Sunday at 4:30. :yikes:
the camper is in real nice original condition. It has a few issues that I will need to address but overall is in useable shape as is. I have a 75 Scout II xlc that I have been saving for something special. So it will get this camper installed on it. Here are some pictures of the trip and a few after we got it home and popped it up in the driveway. I will be uploading more as I get it cleaned up and then start the process of installing it on the Scout.

loaded and ready to head back to oregon.

That looks damn cool. Sounds like a fun but tough trip to go get it.

Were you two able to move the camper around without jacks or did you take some for loading it?

What is the hole that would be near the floor on the left side at the front. It shows in the first picture above where it is popped up? Heater?

Nice, but how are you going to get that and the trail rig to naches and sfr?

I know you'll have the solution, by the time it gets close.:yesnod:

The trip was a killer but fun at the same time. Dads buddy where we picked up the camper had a 2 post car lift. He was able to pick the camper up off of gary's trailer when he delivered it and then set it on ours when we got there to pick it up. :icon_cool: could not have been any easier. The toughest part was building the braces to keep it from flopping over on the drive home. :yikes:
that whole you see is just a little nook for storage. Or is it a cranny? :icon_confused:

I think I need to build a 383 stroker for the camper Scout and then use it to tow the crawler. :ihih:

That thing looks real clean, Mike. I like how all the original decals are still in good shape. Typical problem areas like cracked corners on the vinyl pop up material don't seem to be an issue...

I can't wait to see it in person.

That's a storage compartment. You can see the heater box and round vent hole in the second to last photo that shows the door from the inside - look down and to the right.

Hey Mike - does it have the original table and stand?

I will be in oregon in early dec. - plan to see it then...

I stayed in my camper this past weekend while deer hunting. It rained all night Saturday and I was warm and comfortable.

When are you getting a camper, Joe? I think that casa grande is still parked on that street... It'd look good on your jimmy.

Yep the original table and stand. Plus it has the awning and the steel posts that hold it up.

Also came with this....:ihih:

I'm guessing more of these campers would still be around if people would have read that "important" message on the left.

He is selling the jimmy and steping up to a Scout real soon. I have several for him to choose from. :dita:

I was all ready to buy the 800 and the mud dragon axles after naches but then I didn't get an invite for the crushers... :dita:

if didn't leave my paycheck at the tile store today you might have been right. I need to finish this damn shop project...

Ya sorry about that. You deserve to go on that trip too. The last couple of trips you have been on with me were kinda disappointing. The cusher trip would have made up fo that in spades. It was an epic day.:icon_cool:
plan on leaving your next check at ihcs and I'll get you fixed up with a Scout.

I am a 50% expert on four wheel campers now - so if you need any help - let me know!!

After 2 months of repairs and upgraded mine is almost set for week long trips.

mine is only half as cool as yours though... It fits a fullsize pikcup and not a Scout....

But I'd be interested in a Scout model to fix up - they are cool!

I came real close to bringing 2 home from co. But about a month before I left to pick this one up. The other guy that I had been talking to just kinda dissapered. So I only came home with one. :icon_confused:

please excuse my lack of knowledge here... Is this camper made to fit a Scout II?

Yes. They were made by the four wheel camper company. The models for scouts, blazers, broncos were a little different than there regular models. The regular models are designed to be removed easily while the Scout model is more permanent and becomes part of the Scout.

See the company here:

I saw my first one in a Scout in about 2001 - I thought it was some custom job - but now I know the rest of the story.

Tons of Scout pictures in fwc's website gallery:
