ignition stuck

Bought a 1980 Scout II with a 304 on Friday. Everything worked well the past two days. Just went to start her up, it cranked and died. That's fine, I probably didn't give it enough gas. Here is the porblem...

My key is stuck in the ignition in the on position. The ignition wont turn back to its original position. Actually it wont move at all.

What am I looking at?

The steering column mounted ignition switch May be bound up, or there is a problem with the ignition tumbler. Try working the steering wheel back and forth while you fiddle with key. Resist the urge to use pliars on the ignition tumbler. Hopefully you disconnected the battery right way as leaving the key in on position without the engine running for more than brief time is not advised.

There is not a release lever and I did disconnect the battery.

I decided to buy another ignition lock. I hope this is just a simple fix, I am less than a mechanic. I have seen a few post on how to replace it so I hope can get this right.

Thanks

So now I have the streering wheel off and I am stuck again. I see three screws, I assume they come out and the turn signal lever comes off. Should the yellow mechanism come out then? Anything else I need to know?

Climb2safety:

the "yellow Mechanism"(1980 Model) will have to come out but you will need a special tool to do it. There are threads on this board that cover it.

There is a snap ring that needs to be removed as seen in this pic.

Good luck,
