75 Scout II. Holley gold box distributor, stock coil.
About 2 months ago, I started having issues with getting vehicle started. It would start right up sometimes then it would almost drain the battery at other times. I had no faith in the manual choke and I believed flooding May have been an issue. At the time I had 2210 Holley carb on 2 bbl manifold. I noticed a leak at the back of the valley pan. Removing the the manifold revealed a botched job of repairing a welch plug. It is possible that leak was from here or gaskets. I found a used manifold (4bbl) and had it cleaned up and got new gaskets for valley pan, manifold, thermostat(both) and valve covers while I was at it. I bought an edelbrock 1406 with electric choke. Once I had all the pieces I reassembled. While I was at it I ordered a petronix iii part no. 7ho-181. Prior to it arriving I tried to get the engine to start. No luck. It arrived today. I installed it with the red wire going to the coil(+) and the black going to coil (-).
I removed the gold box completely and there was the positive wire from the bulkhead harness to the coil. I connected a ground to the block. I once again tried, no start. I replaced the coil and the distro cap and the rotor. Right now I am waiting for the battery to charge up as all that cranking was draining. I am hoping this works, but if it does not what are my next steps or did I possible miss something along the way? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
