If you need a laugh...

This doesn't beat the "wheel in the tree" story, but its just as miserable.
I dropped a stainless spacer down the manifold last week during a carb change. I could feel it with my finger, and figured I could coax it out with a welding rod. Then maybe the shop vac w/ fuel hose attached, and then more welding rod with double sided tape. You can see where this is going...
A friend is a captain at the local fire station, and he brought up their rescue camera for finding people in debris, and sure enough, it had migrated all the way down the #6 intake runner right behind the intake valve. So off came the intake. Pics document the pain. The spacers were to clear the egr valve on my modified 700r4 throttle/tv bracket.
On a good note, I did discover I had been sucking oil past a couple intake bolts that must penetrate the heads into the rocker area. So the gaskets got sealed up around the ports with black permatex (not rtv) and the bolts all got thread sealant. It does run better without the vacuum leaks (and the new carb).
Its a project that is still not complete, but there is light now at the what I think is the end of the tunnel. Would love to meet up with everyone in oregon this summer.

Ya never know what "wheel in the tree" event beholds us next. That is why I am a firm believer in good kar karma and exorcising all po virus demons to help ensure not coming home on the hook.

Don't feel bad, I've re-rebuilt a few engines in which the part wan not missed/noticed untill it fired for the first time. :incazzato::icon_crying:

no I didn't do it but the owners did.. Nuts, washers and bolts but never a spacer.

Sorry you had to pull it down. It looks very nice. I don't see any copper coat on those intake gaskets though...... Do I?

Ouch... Hope I do not do that, but, the older I get, the more clumsy I get.

I guess my corvair mechanic had done that at least once because the first thing he did upon removing a carb was to "plug" the intake manifold -- rag, plastic cap, masking tape.

Memo to self -- use steel washers so you have half a chance of getting one out with a magnet..

To think how close I was to just using a different spacer. I didn't actually see the thing drop in. Just had that hunch. Anyway, glad I checked. 10 years ago, I would have been doing a valve job this week on a brand new motor....

No copper coat, but the rems of gray rtv around the (water) ports. Well spotted...

"around here" -- michael mayben, in particular, and robertk, also - 2 coats of a "copper coat" product (cannot remember the product name) is the correct way to install intake manifold gaskets...

Michael mayben really does not like rtv used on an engine. From what he has described, I would have to agree...

I think they use permatex #2 to seal bolts that go into oil passages -- flywheel bolts and others.

Checkout michael's thread beercan maneefol...

Most of the re-rebuilds I have done had severe piston camage one had the intake valve bend and the head broke off anf got shoved edge first through the piston. Happened guring a cam beark in that was run a 2500 rpm..... Needed one new head too...

The copper coat I use is made by permatex and comes in a stubby rattle can..

is the above from bolt / nut down the intake manifold?

Or, is it from rtv?
