I have a 1973 scoutt II with a 345. It is idling very rough, almost chugging, put seems to run just fine. Any help?

We need far more details regarding your ignition and carburetion setup, along with any po-virus issues that May be present. And good detailed pics of the top of your engine with the air cleaner removed so that a visual inspection May be made.

And a simple major "tune-up" is the place to start.

Might be as simple as a quick idle mixture adjustment...anything else is simple a shot in the dark without performing some basic diagnostics.

In the era when that vehicle was produced...a "major tune-up" in the typical dealership or independent garage would have consisted of:

1) compression test.
2) replace plugs, plug cables, points. Condenser, cap, and rotor.
3) change oil/filter/pcv/air filter, and top off all fluids after inspecting for leaks.
4) set base ignition timing.
5) adjust carburetor idle mixtures using an exhaust gas analyzer and vacuum gauge (dependent upon emissions specs if applicable).
6) verify/adjust tire pressure.
7) pressure test engine cooling system, verify cooling system protection.
8) inspect/replace/adjust belts as needed.
9) inspect exhaust system for leakage.

All the engine work would have been done using an engine analyzer to expedite the process and once the work was completed, the test battery would be run to verify the work, along with an added test known as "cylinder power balance" done in a dynamic fashion...that was in some cases an automated test dependent upon the level of sophistication of the engine analyzer being used.
