Idle is smooth, in gear carb sputters, engine stalls

I have a 1972 Scout II that was sitting undisturbed for 6 years. I started it up and it ran fine in idle for up to 30 minutes at a time.

I worked on mainly cosmetic problems while the vehicle was in my driveway, and yesterday decided to take it our for a test drive.

At first everything seemed fine... I was lurching a little (press the accelorator and it would take a few seconds to catch) but nothing major.

After about 4 times going around the block the carb started to backfire every few seconds when I pressed the accelorator and the rig would die. I nursed the vehicle back into the driveway by starting the engine... Idle fine... But once I put it in "d" drive, got the same sputtering and the engine dying.

Is this a carborator issue? If so, what would you suggest doing to test/fix the issue?

Thanks.

No carburetor/fuel system can sit for years and not have issues, simply doesn't work that way on many fronts.

The carburetor simply must be correctly overhauled and not just "fixed". Most especially the 22xx mixers used on the Scout II application. If you do some searching here you will find that we deal with this stuff continuously around ihon.

I promise, when ya open up that carb it's going to look like the gates of hell inside!

All information needed for dealing with these carburetors is contained in this sub-forum, your stuff won't be any different! Start with this thread, assuming your carburetor is a Holley 22xx series:

If...your carburetor is a Holley 2300 oem version (if the engine combo is oem, a '72 could be different), then use this thread to begin:
