Hub swap

I have auto locking hubs on my Dana 44 and some parts are chewed up in there from the po. My driveshaft was still spinning with the hubs in auto so I would like to swap to manual hubs. My question is what is involved and do you guys recommend a brand? Thanks

Guy has a set of warn for sale. I was thinking about them for spares but it sounds like you need them more!

I haven't pulled auto hubs for a while but I seem to remember it not being too dificult. The manual hubs are easier! You'll want to remove the 6 mounting bolts and pull off whatever comes off. Then there will be a snap ring on the end of the axle you have to remove. The rest of the bub should come off. And that should be it. Also don't forget to check the spline count of your axle before you buy hubs. Mine are 27 spine.

After you put the big part of your new hub on. Do you have a service manual? Might be a good time to repack/ inspect your wheel bearings while you're in there! Or maybe I'm getting carried a way:icon_rolleyes:

I have a 77 SSII. Bout to work on IH manual hubs. Note these are OEM IH hubs. Front Disc brakes. 5 lug.
The 6 small retainer screws, one is a security torx, all others philips. Manual says NEVER remove the “B” set of screws. But I can’t get the hub off. So I removed 5 philips — the 3 outer set and 2 on inner side closest to brake rotor. Seems that last torx is holding the hub on. Do I remove that despite what the IH manual says?

Are you talking about the screws that retain the selector dial? Those have always been Allen head screws in my experience. They have to come out so you can get to the snap ring. I can't recall and reference to "B" screws, but I don't have the manual in front of me. I have had my hubs out and back in numerous times. Its always been a pretty straight forward, intuitive process.

Yes, these are on the manual selector (Engage- Disengage). I too have had only Allen screws in past. These have screws as described above.
(I am not referring to the six 7/16” bolts holding the hub/clutch on to the wheel.)

The manual is very clear about NOT removing the set of 3 “B” screws for this type hub. Never remove them says book.

The 3 “A” screws are all philips and are closest to the wheel (inboard). These are the ones am supposed to remove, and have done so.
The 3 “B” screws include 2 philips and the 1 security torx (outboard).
Haven’t been able to expose the retainer ring yet. Sooooo.....think I will be removing the B screws so I can get to the axle.

See photo.

Thanks for quick reply!

Oops. I’m a dummy. The A screws include that torx and are on inboard side; which are what is holding the hub selector on.
B screws are outboard. I had it backwards in describing my.....challenge. So all good now.
Needed good night sleep.

Those are Selectro or Dualmatic hubs. I've not been into a set of those yet, although I do have a set of them on a project vehicle. The Warn hubs are what I'm familiar with.
