I bought a Scout II SSII 2 months ago but it was in pieces. It is the time to put my gas tank back but I have no clue how it is mounted to the frame. I have 2 straps and 2 hooks. I cannot find the place where the straps goes to hold the front of the tank, maybe it is because I have no floor in the back of the truck (it was to rusty so the guy before me removed it). Are the mounts under the floor?:icon_eek:.

What year is the Scout? Is the tank the stock 19 gallon version or an after market over sized tank?

The gas tank mounts to the body, so yes, if the po removed the floor, and didn't leave the supports/crossmeber's he removed the suports for the tank as well.

Repair the floor, or fab up some new mounts off the body or even off the frame if you wish. *some* of the 33-gallong aftermarket tanks mount to the frame, so thats an option.

Oh snap. If I wasn't so amped up from adrinaline after barrel rolling 3 to 5 times and landing rubber side up in my 74 Scout - I would have taken a close up photo shoot of how the tank is mounted. But forgot - sorry.

But one end of each strap gets bolted to a cross member - near the upper shock mount - tucked away up fairly close to the bed floor. The two j-hooks get placed (like an upside down j) into a couple holes on the inside of the crossmember that the rear bumper attaches too. Then slide the tank into place, between the two straps and the underneath of the bed. Use a floor jack to help hold the tank into place tucked in the pocket between the frame rails under the bed. Then swing the straps upto the j-hooks and with a couple nuts threading the straps into place to secure them. All the while doing this ya make sure you hook up the hose between the tank and filler neck and all the vent lines - which are routed between the driver side frame rail and body.

Hope this helps

Luc; one more thing to watch out for is the primary fuel line coming from the sending unit. I have in the past replaced the tank and pinched that fuel line off when I used a floor jack. Guess what happened; it ran for about a hundred yards out of the shop and ran out of gas.lol I had a heck of a time fixing my mistake on the road. Lol

thanks for the fuel line reminder while using the floor jack to hold the tank
in place. I firgot to add that into my last post

also, the same warning goes for tightening the nuts holding the straps to
the j-hooks
