Holly vs Edelbrock. New to carbs.

Hello! I have a 1974, 100 with a 392 in it, I have been having a lot of problems with my truck running Rich, I currently have a 4 barrel edelbrock 600. The problem I have is that no matter how much I adjust the thing it makes the ruck run Rich, then when I run it down enough for it to stop running Rich the truck seems starved for fuel and wants to die on me.

Now I admit I don't know crap about carbs, this is my very first vehicle, I got it to learn and thats what I am trying to do. I do have enough cash saved up to buy a new carb of either style, but I will prefer to buy a used one to learn how to rebuild it.

So if anyone could give me some advice on what type of carb should be used with this 392 would be awesome, if I can save the current carb that would be cool too, but I dont mind staring fresh and get the 'good stuff' if need be.

Thanks much.

I think it sounds like it could be a bad power valve. When one of those goes out, it dumps in a lot of fuel and causes your truck to run Rich. Get a kit for that carb and go through it.

Hope this helps,
jim

The edelbrock mixer is a clone of a carter afb, those carbs do not use a "power valve".

Unless your edelbrock has been damaged in some manner due to a ham-fisted po, it is infinitely rebuildable. So simply get a kit for an edelbrock and learn with the one you have, you don't need another one for that!

When you say it runs "Rich" across the board, that can mean many things. Primarily overall richness is due to a fuel level setting internally that is too "high". The kit comes with new needle/seat assemblies, so simply follow the instructions for setting float "drop" and "height" and go with that.

The only adjustment for mixture on that carb that you can manual manipulate without physically changing needle settings, piston springs, jets, etc. Is the idle mixture screws. And the adjustment of those screws affects only the idle quality and tip-in, not the carb operation above an idle speed.

Go to the edelbrock website and download/print the tuning guide for your carburetor. But first, you need to positively id which carb you have, one of the "performer" series, or the "thunder" series. They are somewhat different in design, though tuning elements are very similar. Study that document until you fully understand it.

Awesome thanks much for all the help guys, ill take a look around the site and try to get to the bottom of it :)
