I had a great time!
The total count was 13 of us with 7 IH’s and one Jeep. I got there Saturday morning, unloaded and we all headed up to the obstacle course. It was a fun show at the mud pit as we watched about 20 different trucks try to make it through. Some really clean high dollar stuff getting just totally destroyed with mud people up to their waste in the stuff hooking up to get pulled out… lots of laughs and good times.
We ended up having the hamburger lunch around 1:30 – 2:00. I think everyone was happy to skip chilly dogs for a change, me included. After lunch Joe, jayson, rob and I decided to run the jungle and this is where it got interesting. Toward the beginning of the trail rob broke a spring hanger and the front driveshaft fell out as a result. The top of this trail has changed as the park has added some major concrete slabs and lots of large boulders presumably for erosion control and it made the end pretty darn gnarly. And, this is where Joe got into trouble as a large boulder took out his front driveshaft / u-joint and wedged itself between his front axle and the oil pan (photo attached) (so glad that driveshaft got it before the oil pan / motor). We spent the next few hours extracting the boulder, winching forward and then fixing the front driveshaft and then a little more winching and he was free. Then, we had to get to winching again to get jayson’s pick-up (tank) out. That took its toll as he bent a spring and tie rod. Somewhere along the trail I lost (stripped out) a transmission / rear motor mount bolt, so nobody got out of that thing unscathed! By this time it was dark so we headed back to camp for some proper adult beverages and dinner.
On Sunday we got a late start as the morning was spent eating breakfast and conversing on how to get robs axle lined up so that we could weld the spring hanger back on. All things considered we were able to get vehicles in place along with winches straps and Joe’s skilled welding it was back together in almost no time at all.
The rest of Sunday was rather light wheeling, packing up, loading up, and heading out with a quick stop for food on the way.
I want to thank everyone who came out! And, while we did have some carnage the team-work was awesome and everyone was able to drive home! I can’t wait until the winter nationals in March!
