74 travellall 100,392cid, 727trans 373,rear 4x2 t runs great with a thermoquad, but timeing it off ! I have all wires correct and dist, 5,deg tdc, and the timeing light only works with the #8 plug????

An inductive timing light should pickup the spark signal on any wire it is connected to, but grumpy is right. Timing on IH v8 engines is done off #8. Pretty much every other make under the sun uses #1. I've seen one of these engines be able to idle on only three cylinders firing. Not well...matter of fact it sounded downright shitty, but the damn thing was running. I don't think there's any way in hell that yours was running on only one cylinder firing. Perhaps your timing light is not up to snuff.

I feel like an idiot now........ Knowlege is power, thank you for schooling me! This is my first IH and I feel like a 3rd grader I have worked on trucks my whole adult life, and now im back to square one haha, is there any other obvious thing I should know so I dont ask damn fool questions to yall anymore?

First thing is...don't beat yourself up. That is one of the most common errors binder noob's make, but also one of the simplest and quickest things for an old timer to correct. Other obvious IH secrets...hmm, that sounds like a thread title, but I don't think there are that many. 'ol #8 is the main gotcha. The IH 4-poppers time off #1. Oil pressure tends to be a bit lower with these engines when viewed on a gauge that has numbers. You won't see any 70 - 80 - 90 psi readings, even when the oil is cold. If you do, something's wrong! Most any topic you can come up with has most likely already been discussed somewhere hereabouts, and probably multiple times, but don't be skert ta ask if you can't find a satisfactory answer in a timely fashion.

At at at! No beating up the inner mechanic. ;) the guy I bought my Scout from had just redone "plugs, wires etc" so it ran rough and started harder but we "knew" it wasn't ignition. Lol even timed it once. Timing light all over the place. Still no clue. Finally decided to start at the begining. There were three wires in the right firing order. That baby made two 118 mile round trips. I dont even know why it started. So...live and learn. No idiots here. :) however I agree....something is off with ur timing light itself. You should get a flash from all wires. If theres any doubt though, pull a plug. If no spark is getting there, you'll see the evidence.
