Help with Line Ticket and Differential on 78 SII

Oops, I just realized this might should be in the axle tech q's....sorry

I've been scouring some threads to no avail.

I'm mostly trying to figure out if I really have a Powr-Lok or the trac-lok (fingers crossed I dont) but I've read that after 74? It was crack-lok only.??? Not sure.

Im 99.99% sure that the axle has not been swapped since I bought it from the original owner and not one other thing on the Scout has been changed.. And im asking because when I was putting around in the snow in my back yard in 2wd only one of the rear wheels spins...??? I have yet to go plug it in 4wd and see if it changes.. (sorry for the n00b question but does it have to be in 4wd for the rear to not slip and turn both wheels?) also could it be that even though the sticker says "both rear wheela" it could be both front wheels that are actually locked? (doubt it because of the ra code)

anyhow the numbers from the line ticket are as follows and I'll try to attach the photo of the ticket.

Front - gr-3.73 fa44 frt axle 020449657 cgc 0487510c91
rear - gr-3.73 ra28 rear axle 140289657 c a 0487512c91

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and what is the writing at the bottom all about? Paint? Can anyone tell me what the original paint color is? I'm 72% sure it's original.

Just read this:
an ra-28/14028 axle shows to be a "pre-1970" powrlok, then the same axle code was transitioned to a traclok differential version. Reading between the lines there...I also "think" that is when the change was affected from the 19 spline to 30 spline carrier/axle shaft setup.

So you are correct, a visual inspection is the only way to truly verify the swap feasibility!

Based upon lineset information, the front axle is an fa-44 which means it's a 3200lb. With disc brakes and an "open" differential.

In the rear, an ra-28 number translates as a 3500lb. D44 axle with trac-lok after model year 1970.

A trac-lok axle center section is a limited slip design. When functioning properly, both sides transmit power based upon the actual internal quality of the parts. If only one side actually applies engine power, then the unit needs to be reconditioned.

Also, engagement of the front axle (4x4 mode) will not deliver any added traction capability to the rear axle than you'd experience from that drive axle in normal 4x2 mode.

Thanks all and michael, three last questions....or maybe 9...

1. I just pulled the plug on the rear diff with trac-look and it's black/grey thick stuff with a nice metallic sheen. When you talk of reconditioning, would draining and refilling with the correct gl-4 with limited slip additive bring it back to life at all? It's only got 62k miles and 0 miles of that off road...?

2. If it does require a serious rebuild I'd rather drop in a detroit or powr, aussie...similar. Its that a large job or can a weekend warrior actually pop one in fairly easily?

Thanks

According to your line set code you have a limited slip diff. By the description you gave of only getting one wheel to spin at a time by accelerating in a compromised traction situation, that indicates the limited slip function has failed due to worn clutches. I have the same diff in the rear of my '74. I can easily get both rear wheels to spin in unison a snow patch by stomping on the loud pedal. Mine has far more miles on it that what you've advertised yours as having. I don't reckon that a fluid change alone is going to be your magic bullet. I know at least the aussie locker you mentioned will only work with an open diff carrier, like what you and I both have in our front axles. I can't speak to the others. That's the preferred location for an automatic, lunch box style locker anyway. For the rear axle, a selectable locker is a better choice if you encounter icy roads with any regularity.

Assume the IH paint codes are 5902 and 9219.

Put autocolorlibrary in google search. The web site is not "working" well for me. I can get to the chip chart for 78 IH, but I cannot bring up the"enlarged" (readable) page.

Thanks scoutboy, maybe I should just put a lunchbox up front and leave the back alone... But to fix the problem, should I get the trac-lik working again? ( I read that you dont want to rebuild them because it's the same $$ to just buy new)?? Or is there any other option for replacement? It'll be a while before I get it lifted and ready for some offroad anywho...

And Robert thanks for the paint code info. You're right the website times out and I cant get it to load up the large images either. I'll keep trying.

Thanks again.

Robert - got it to work and am posting it up here in case someone else needs it! Great find! Thanks again

mines woodbine green! What a cool name.
