Help with a 1974 Scout 2 purchase!

Hey guys!

My aunt is wanting to purchase a Scout. Apparently she's always liked them. She sent me a link to it, which I was going to post but apparently I need 15 points before I can post a link lol. So I'll just add some pictures.

2wd, automatic, 345 V8.

We went and looked at it, and it definitely needs some work. It needs a lot of odds and ends (wiper blade arms, marker lights all around, top is rusty so it needs sanded and painted, glass needs installed into the top [which he has], AC needs hooked up, needs an ignition switch [currently hooked up to a toggle switch and push button], passenger exhaust manifold is cracked and leaking, needs brakes, etc), but overall seems to be in decent shape. No rust to speak of, fresh paint, wheel wells have been coated with the rubber undercoat, new shocks, new bushings on the leaf springs, the engine does run but he has to feather the throttle to keep it running due to the carb needing adjusted. I can't speak to the transmission, as I haven't tried driving it with the issues I've listed. He's asking $4800 OBO. What do you guys think? I'm pretty good with cars, but I don't know a thing about these old scouts.

If this is in the wrong place, feel free to move it.

Thanks everyone!

Prices are somewhat high these days for these Scout's but looking at the one you have the price is fair. If your aunt wants to turn it into a 4wd it's real easy to do. Did you check the front body mounts and rockers for rust? If so, and it is solid, start by offering $3500 for it and negotiate with the seller from there.

I did check the rockers. I don't remember if I checked the front body mounts. Like I said, I didn't see a whole lot of rust. What I did see was just surface. Now the top is covered in rust, 90% of which is surface, with a couple parts rusted through. She's not interested in 4x4, so I doubt we'll be changing it over. I had thought to offer $4000 and try and not go over $4250. But that is just my uneducated opinion.

Well, she bought it. Ended up getting it for $4300 and he towed it to her house, where I assume I will be starting the repairs. I'll probably end up making another thread going through the restoration process, so watch out for that!
