Ok so I just got my first Scout it is a 79 Scout two and someone befor me locked the rear end spyder gears. So I just baught a new axel but the gear ratio's are different, so my question is can I use the one I just baught to fix the one that is locked, and how hard is that or would it be better to get some auto lockers and put them in instead please help.
Im new to all this so sorry I dont know if you have all the info you need the front gears are 3.54 but the back tag isnt labled but I think is should be the same. But the axel I just got is geared to 3.07.
Can I just swap axels or well what should I do.
Tha main question is what is the best and right way to fix this problem. Thank you

Depending on how you are going to use your Scout is the main question. The carrier can be swapped out from the axle you bought to the axle under your Scout. In other words the ring gear off your locked rear can be bolted to the carrier from the one you bought and installed. The installation process should be done by a shop with the correct tools for the job as the backlash and pinion depth must be set.
Im guessing that by locked you mean the rear end has had a locker,a spool or its been welded for off road use. If your gonna use it for off road and limited street use, leave it locked , if its gonna be an asphalt junkie then swap the ring gear to the open carrier and put it in the axle under your Scout to keep the ratio the same.
Unless you have a press to remove bearings and a generous supply of shims a shop visit is in your future. Or wait it out and find a matching ratio rear axle.

:confused5:john I read your posting on the binder site yesterday, that jerk from az. Had no right to attempt to put down your spelling, what a jerk!

John, I read your post yesterday on the binder site, that jerk from az. Had no right to attempt to put you down for your grammer, he must have low self-esteem! Hoping you solve your problem!

Thanks for the support guys yea I dont have the wrighting skills that I did in high school but no worries, so for the Scout I want to use it for bolth driving and off road but it is my toy so im just not a pavement junkie but I was told that if it was locked that was bad for it off road im sorry im just confused I was thinking that auto lockers would be perfect to drive it up to the montains and play what do you guys think.

My .02$
you need to google and do alot of reading about how the different forms of diffs, open, limited slip, lockers work. Also what it takes to do an install. There is gobs of info out there. Then if you have questions ask them.

You could also go get a manual to explain to you in great detail on how to do it.
