Help ID and Diagnose Transmission Issue

Hello all,

I recently purchased a 1978 Scout 2. It has the original 345 engine and I have no clue where to locate the transmission/transfer case SN's so I can figure out what they are.

My second issue is the transmission(Automatic) wont engage. The transfer case is in 2H, I topped off the transmission (pint low), the linkage moves through the pattern freely but wont engage at all.

Im curious if there are specific things I need to look at before I pull it and send it to the shop. Is there a part of the cable connector that breaks commonly? Is there an internal connector or valve body that I need to adjust as a part of troubleshooting? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

A 1978 Scout II will have a Chysler 727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission, built for IHC to mate with the IHC SV-8 engine.
The Transfer Case would be a Dana Model 20. (4L-N-2H-4H)
FYI, these do not have S/N's.

" the linkage moves through the pattern freely but wont engage at all." I assume you mean the shifter in the cab?

Did you crawl under the Scout II and watch while an assistant moved the shift lever while you observed the linkage for movement at the transmission? While observing all safety precautions?

You may need a new shift cable assembly. But you should verify. Lokar makes a good replacement shift cable assy for the Scout II.

You also need to ensure that the Throttle Valve linkage from the carburetor to the auto trans is connected and adjusted properly, otherwise you could damage the transmission.

....and curious that you purchased this Scout II and apparently it doesn't drive?? Or do I misunderstand?

Well, fortunately, at this time I can see the cable connection through the floor board......the boots are missing so its exposed. I did crawl underneath to check attachment points for the cable etc....

the one thing I am not hearing is any type of click as you move through the gear range. that is why I was asking if there are any common parts that break associated with this type of issue.

Thanks for your response. The truck sat for a year and has 186k miles on it......transmission could be worn out.

To 1975IH200's point, is the linkage at the transmission being moved in response to input from the gear selector lever? The engine need not be running to check this. All you need is eyes on the trans linkage while the gear lever is moved to and fro. Trans fluid level checking of these units is meant to be done with warmed up engine running at idle and with the transmission linkage placed in neutral. Do you have any history on this rig? Has it been driven recently?
