Heater hose ports? Which one?

Hey guys. Question. On this 345 that came out of an '80 Scout II which port on the water pump do I use for the heater? See pic....

Second question. On the intake manifold I know I use the rear passenger port for the heater. Can I block off the port at the thermostat housing? See next pic...

I just put a 4 barrel manifold on my Scout 2 also. The one I used is a square bore and it does not have a port for the heater in the manifold, so it was plumbed like a pickup with 2 hoses going around the engine, 1 to the pump and the other to a fitting on the water neck. Since changing to this setup the heater starts blowing warm air way, way sooner than it used to.

So on your rig I'd use the 2 ports on the water pump and plug the one in the manifold.

What carb to you plan to use?

Wait a minute, looked again and now see that normal IH bypass hose is not installed. Instead they now use the outlet from the water neck to go to the top fitting on the water pump. In that case to restore the factory hoses and have a bypass, run your heater hoses to the bottom fitting on the pump and the one in the side of the intake.

Im using the stock carter thermoquad. It came with the motor and was recently rebuilt by a reputable shop.

So lower hose on the water pump, and rear port on intake.

The purpose of the bypass is to allow water to circulate in the engine while it is warming up. After the thermostat opens the bypass is closed and the water circulates through the radiator.
