GM 14 bolt differences

I know that there is another 14 bolt thread but I have a lot of specific questions that I figured would best be answered in my own thread.

I am looking to buy GM 14 bolt axles (and yes I plan on doing a steering conversion so I can run a front 14 bolt) but have read into a few different variations in the years and models.

I have read into different years having different sized bearings??

Well what years are what??

What years did they start coming with discs??

Did they ever make a high or low pinion??

Whats the difference in a full float and a semi float??

If I get one with with a gov-lock is that just the differential its self and can be replaced with with something like an ARB air locker??

Would it be best to get a weld on brake bracket and get a set of 4 piston disc brake rotors??

What modifications would need to be done to run discs??

What years and models had how wide of axles??

What is a good axle width for an all around wheeler??

Start reading:

14 bolt bible

And building a front 14 bolt axle is a bit of an undertaking. Unless you are going to buy one prebuilt (I'm sure Jeff here at ihonlynorth would love to build one for you!!) I'd stick with just a rear for a while until your knowledge/skills improve.

Again, you have your research cut out for you.
