Hi all I was wondering what gears came stock in a 72 Scout and in a 78 Scout? Im picking up a Dana 44 from a 78 and dont have the cash for new gears, so I was thinking of just doing a little trading for the rear as well if the gears didnt match up. Thanks all

Depends on - customer ordered / dealer ordered / factory "supplied":

2.72, 3.07, 3.31, 3.54, 3.73, 4.09, 4.27 are possibe axle ratios

depending on the year...

You forgot owner installed, which opens the door up to many more ratios.

For the op, take a socket set with you and pop the cover off and look at the ring gear. There should be two number stamped on the ring gear, 44-9 or some such combo. Then you divide the two numbers to get the gear ratio.

It should look something like this

If you can't find the stamp on the ring gear, count the teeth on the ring gear and the teeth on the pinion and divide. If the ratio doesn't match then don't buy it.
