Gear oil for a 63 scout 80?

Hi all,

first post. First Scout. First rebuild. Wahoo!

I have a 1963 Scout 80, original 152cid slant 4, original 27 front end with Dana t-18 twin stick. Rear end is a Dana 44 out of Scout II.

My questions are... I have a leak in my rear differential and gear box. I am going to change the gear oil, covers, bolts, and gaskets. 1. What gear oil do I use? 2. What do I torque the bolts at? 3. Where can I find a owners manual/shop manual for this rig?

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the sickness!!!! It will engulf your whole life and make you one of us. Leave now while you are still able young grasshopper!!!!
Lol just jokin!
First off, manuals ,which are the greatest thing for Scout owners since the bible, can be had from binder books and possibly hre at ihon. Get 1!!!!
The Dana 44 will use 80/90 with the posi additive if its a limited or trac-loc, the d18 transfer case will run straight 50w motor oil, I run 70w nitro kendall in mine but 50w will be just fine, available at any parts store that carries valvoline or another racing oil.
Bolt torque specs will be in the manual. Dont have mine handy at the moment or I'd tell ya. Someone should pick up that possibly knows them by heart

Oils have changed a lot since our scouts were built. I've been running mobil 1 15-50 full synthetic in the t-18/d-20 for more than a decade with no issues. Shifts a lot easier when cold too.

In the d-44 I've run redline and royal purple hyphoid oils to keep the clutches in the power-loc from chattering. They chattered with the mobil 1 product.

Enjoy and welcome!
