Fuel sending unit O-ring seal

Sorry basic question here. I took apart and am replacing the fuel sending unit. I noticed the o-ring was simply placed in last time without any type of sealent, is that preferable? Should I apply a sealent or anything when I replace the new unit?
 
Use a new o-ring with no sealant.

Make sure that the "tabs" on the tank that "hold down" the metal ring are not bent so that the metal ring is not "loose"...
 
Thank you sir. Just wanted to make sure things get done correctly. I will be posting pics of the evap system later to clairfy some things.
