I have a 78 terra, 196 w/ Holley 1940, that was resurrected from a field by the po. When I bought it it ran for about 20 miles then quit. Didn't seem to be getting fuel so I put a cheap electric pump in and removed and capped off the mechanical. That worked for a day or so then quit. So I replaced it with another electric, same story. Worked for a day or so then quit.
So I dropped the tank, cleaned it out (nothing fancy, bolts and detergent, wasn't a ton of varnish in there.) and blew out the lines with compressed air. The fuel pickup looked ok so I cleaned it up and put it back on.
Put everything back together and get the same symptoms. Can run sometimes on hot days but usually no fuel at all. At this point I can blow air back through to the tank and hear it bubble, but not getting fuel. So I thought maybe the carb was just jammed up and keeping the pump from pumping anything due to pressure. So I call it for the winter and let it sit.
This spring I rebuilt the carb and just put it back on. And found that even with the fuel line open I am not getting fuel up front. I will try blowing air back through the line again but I have a feeling I will likely get the same thing (bubbles audible in the tank, but no fuel out of the pump.)
any guesses as to what I'm missing here? Maybe the lines torn up inside making a kind of check valve? Maybe I need to go buy another electric pump? Prime the line somehow?
If I do get it working I'd like to go back to a mechanical pump. I just thought it would be easier to diagnose with one you could hear if it was running or not.
Thanks in advance!
