engine problems or is the scout engines just that unique?

I started working on a turbo 304 build and have taken the engine apart to replace everything, clean it up, and do major head work. First problem I found when I took the passenger side valve cover off was that one of the rocker arms was completely broke. Problem 2 is when I took the passenger side head off and looked at the position of the pistons on the driver side cylinder bank the pistons alternate(one piston is is at the bottom of the stroke and the next is at the top of the stroke then the third at the bottom and 4th at the top etc) on the passenger side cylinder bank the first two pistons from the front of the engine are at the bottom of the stroke and the last two are at the top of the stroke. That shouldn't be like that right? I haven't taken the oil pan off and looked at the connecting rods cause the Scout ran fine the last time I drove her before running out of gas and tearing the engine down

Nothing odd about the IH sv-8 engine. A 90* v design of eight cylinders.

The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.
One cylinder fires for every 90* of crankshaft rotation.

The same firing order as millions of small block Chevy v-8 engines (except ls).

Also most amc v-8, most buick v-8 (except nailheads), pontiac v-8, olds v-8, mopar small v-8 & large v-8, and modern mopar hemi v-8 engines all have the same firing order as IH sv-8 engines.

Yes I know that but what I'm talking about is where my pistons are in relation to each other the driver side looks like it should the passenger side looks screwed up

Looks totally normal.
Would not run fine if not.
The rods connect in pairs front most connect to the same through, second ones back paired, and so on.
The position if a function of wear the through is.
