Engine Oil for 79' Scout II

I have a 79' Scout II with 36k original miles on it...still an infant. I just want to make sure I use the correct oil in it. I live in massachusetts where it can get fairly cold, but I don't drive it in the winter I just start it and let it warm up. What I am getting from all these posts is that swepco is the best, and a 345 will take 7 quarts. Should I use 10w30 or 15w40? Any and all information is extremely welcome.

regarding your post on what weight engine oil to use;

my answer would usually be to ask if you stored the Scout in a garage, or out in the elements, but either way, the swepco 306 10w30 would be my suggestion, as it does have a lower pour point than the swepco 306 15w40. Your area is mostly moderate in the summer, with a few "hot" days, and using the 10w30 would be an excellent year-round choice.

So the oil today is no longer good for older engines...what about the filters? I ordered some of the swepco 10w30 but are the filters of today going to filter out all the good stuff?
 
An oil filter's purpose is to filter out foreign particles that can damage the critical surfaces inside your engine. The ingredients blended into xyz brand motor oil are just that...blended. They'll pass through the filter media. In addition to the swepco, you should also choose a quality oil filter such as a wix, hastings, baldwin or purolator.
 
Scoutboy's explanation about filters is spot on.

But, I can also tell you that swepco uses a much tighter filter system (10 micron is what I am told) in the manufacturing of their oils than most of the other brands (40 micron is what I am told), so you are safe in using just about any good quality filter, but don't get into the "0" micron size.
