Duel Radiators

Would there be a reason that my 66 Scout has 2 radiators?

It does get hot and humid where I live and this is a right side drive Scout that was used in the mail fleet so I can understand...

My real question is what should I do? Keep both or put in a fan system?

Please comment your experiences and knowledge as I have very little of each. Thank you!

Happy scouting!

I'd really like to see a pic of that. Could the 2nd one be a transmission cooler? A postal Scout would see a lot of stop and go driving which is hard on automatics.

I think chappie is on to it. Your engine cooling radiator is much larger and is in an upright orientation. The inlet/outlet holes will be roughly two inches in diameter. There would be no need for an additional engine cooling radiator as the stock unit with fan shroud present and all other associated components in a proper state of maintenance is more than adequate to meet the needs of a 196...to say nothing of the plumbing and location challenges that would be involved with a second engine radiator. I doubt that IH had a radiator with an integrated trans fluid cooler available for the auto-equipped Scout 800s, so they would have employed an external fluid cooler, similar in appearance to a radiator, but considerably smaller and thinner with roughly half-inch inlet/outlet fittings. Any rig with an auto trans must have some means of regulating trans fluid temperature during operation. Most 800 models came with manual transmissions, so this was not a concern for the overwhelming majority.

Ok, I got it. The pictures files were to big.

Let me know what you see. Do I need to go back to this design as I will not be delivering mail in it?

And thank you chappie and scoutboy for sharing your knowledge.

Okay, you only have one radiator. It's hooked to your engine with one big hose up top and one big hose down below. The other item looks like an air conditioning condenser that has possibly been re-purposed into a trans fluid cooler. If you're planning on running the bw auto, then you will need to provide a fluid cooler. It doesn't have to be that condenser. You can by a hayden or other reputable brand external auto trans fluid cooler and install it in front of your radiator. If you get a chance to crawl under the Scout with a light and your camera, see if you notice anything down near the trans that looks similar to a radiator. Some of the bw autos utilized a heat exchanger for fluid cooling that I believe was located down near the trans. Why, I have no idea. There's a lot more fresh air to cool hot fluid at the front of the rig.

Just to add to what trever provided...

Many of the borg warner automatics had the trans cooler mounted on the transmission as they were cooled by engine coolant via heater hoses. Similar to a marine (boat) heat exchanger setup.

They also had finned torque converters with vents in the bell housing as the finned tc provided a lot of cooling via the airflow created by the fins.

As for the condensor on the scoutdawgs' Scout 800, I would not use that for a trans cooler. Use a proper auto trans cooler as trever suggests.
