detroits were designed in the 1930's before GM owned them, they're not actually a GM designed engine, or else it'd be in the same boat as the 5.7, 6.2, and 6.5 diesels....I've seen a 6.6 clean house at the truck pulls 2 years in a row, after the second year it warped the heads soo bad they were trashed. Yet I see powerstrokes pull through the gates numerous times with no failures.
just what I've observed. I don't preach IH for the good of my health, or because they're cheap, I'd be a Rich man if they were cheap to build!

April 1937: the company was founded by general motors as the detroit diesel engine division. Its initial product line was the series 71 engine family, consisting of exclusively inline configurations ranging from one to six cylinders.

I guess my sources were wrong, I was told detroit diesel was their own company, later bought out by GM.
it works quite well!!!
