Driveline swap

Howdy, I am new to the Scout world, picked up a 73 Scout II 2 years ago. It has the Dana 30 front and d44 rear. The engine is a 345 4bbl and it has a t18 4spd trans. The engine runs ok but is in need of a rebuild. I have found a 77 Scout II that is a 1 owner. It is all original. Body and frame are pretty much shot, but it has a nice running 304. The build sheet says it has a t427(??)wide ratio 4spd and gr3.54 axles with tracloc. It also has a newer dual exhaust on it.
I wanted to know if it would be an ez swap to take the entire drive line (axles, engine, transmission and xfer case, and dual exhaust) from the 77 and put it in my 73? It seems it should be a direct fit since it is pretty much the same truck I would guess - just dont want to start and run into stuff not bolting/lining up.

This would really be a good solution to keep me on the road until I get time and money to rebuild my 345 set up. Btw, I know the 77 has disc brakes up front but my 73 also is currently running disc brakes up front - must have been converted before I got it.

Any advice or help I could gain here is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Everything should swap right over no problem. Very few things changed when it comes to motor mounts, transmission mounts, fittings and connections under the hood from '73-'77. If you don't tear anything apart you could probably be back on the road in a few days... With not too many trips to the parts store.

Suh-weet thats what I was hoping to hear! Thanks for the reply chris - looks like ill just have to move the bbq next to the Scout for the festivities this weekend :icon_wink: yeah...ill chaulk it up as a 'successful' project if I have fewer then 5 trips to the auto store. Thanks again!

The biggest change is going to be the wiring - but if you label everything as you take one engine out and repalce it with the other it should be easy enough to hook back up.

I swapped a full drivetrain in a weekend by myself and I don't do engine work at all...

Also- get a service manual before you start. They are the most valuable item you will have in your tool box...

Oh yeah?? One weekend..by yourself - cool - sounding more gooder. Yeah..nuts and bolts are pretty ez to make em fit somewhere..but them wires...thats a different story. Definately gonna get some lables and a fine point sharpie marker :icon_wink:

heck yeah...strong believer in manuals. The 77 has a full one in it - not sure what years it covers (cant remember) but will be adding another to the collection if it doesnt contain what I need.

Ive searched other threads and have found that my 4bbl intake from the 345 will not work with the 304..bummer. But maybe the 2 bbl will give me some better mpg right?! :icon_wink:
