Drive Pinion Oil Seal???

Hello all,
I am not a mechanic by any means but here goes... Both my front and rear differentials are leaking where the yoke goes into the pumpkin from the drive shafts. I believe the seal there is called a "drive pinion oil seal"? I was just wondering if ihon's "Dana 30 & 44 pinion seal service kit" is what I need to repair this?

Also is there anything else that May be wrong causing this that I need to prepare for before I tackle this?

77' Scout II, 345, 727, Dana 44 frt & rear

thanks in advance for any help and concerns,

jarrett

Yes, that pinion seal kit you referred to is what you need.

Some Dana/spicer variations of these axles used a "crush sleeve" behind that seal, but the ihc-variation axles were never supplied oem with a crush sleeve, so one is not needed.

However, in most cases, the pinion yoke itself will have a significant wear groove in it where the old seal has eaten into the machined surface. A new seal will most likely leak if a groove is present.

The fix for that is to replace the yoke, or install a "speedee sleeve" over the machined surface to restore it to a smooth condition.

Replacement yokes are in stock, call Jeff regarding a repair sleeve as those are not shown in the online store at this time.

Thanks Mike,

guess that pretty much ends this thread. I will get it all tore down tomorrow and check for grooves on the yokes before placing my order.

Much appreciated,

jarrett

Mike,

I got the front yoke off and it looks good. No siginifant groove where the old seal sat. I can see the line from where oil touched and didn't. But cannot feel or see any groove. Thats good news I guess.

Another quick question though...any tips or tricks to get the rest of the stuff behind the yoke off??? I am having a lot of trouble accomplishing this. Maybe I dont have to the right tools?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

jarrett

Ya lucked out on the yoke dude! Clean it up and re-install.

Don't follow ya about the "rest of the stuff behind the yoke"??? I think you mean the sheemetal slinger? No need to remove that if you are just gonna replace the seal.

If you mean how to remove the seal itself...use a large screwdriver or a small pry bar and pop it out. Sometimes I shoot a self-drilling sheetmetal screw in (say about a #12) and then use a small slap hammer and the puller tip that is designed to hook under the screw head and pop the seal that way.

Those small slap hammer sets sometimes include a "seal/bearing hook" adapter for doing the same.

If ya need a slaphammer, git yore butt over to the harbor freight store on knickerbocker there in sanan and git one, they are cheeeeep and very servicable!

Now ya got me thinkin' about the old zentner's steak house/sheep shearin' shed up in lowake! The one with the air strip beside the parkin' lot for the fly-in crowd.

Mike,

thanks for the reply. I guess I did luck out on the yoke. Have not gotten to the back one yet though. Of course the front was leaking way worse than the rear so I am hoping the rear is in as good or better shape. My luck would be that the rear differential is low on fluid which is why it is not leaking as bad so it is prob in worse shape...:icon_twisted:

anyways, I did finally get the front one off. Guess 30 yrs of rust, dirt, and grime welded it to the housing. And I never once thought of the slap hammer... ...but thats why I buy parts from you guys right...I get all the expert opinions with it...tho it is usually after I break or tear something up due to my impatience. But the expertise is still appreciated.

That harbor freight hasn't been there a year yet so either your a whiz with "store locator" or your lost out here in west texas...but judging from your description of the steak house you are headed east...gets much prettier that direction. I never knew it was zentners steak house. I have been here 7 yrs and it has been called lowake steak house and can you believe I have never found a couple of hours to run out there and eat...in 7 yrs. Guess it has something to do with that young and dumb thing people are always talking about.

So I ordered the seal kits I needed yesterday and will hopefully have the slap hammer before the seals come in so I can start beating on the rear.

Thanks,

jarrett

With the coming of harbor freight to sanang I heard the economy rebounded over nite with no o'bucks needed! If it weren't for hf, I'd be shufflin' dominos in the assisted living village right now!

Zentner's was on on one side of the road and lowake inn was on tha other...but iirc, zentner's wuz the former shearing shed that looked like onena then wwii surplus barracks buildings. One end wuz a real cut-n'-shoot beerjoint. Ya could fly-in, taxi to the beer joint, git drunk, order a platter of real beef, then see if ya could sober up enuff ta git yore ride back in the air after midnite. That's the texian way...only thang they didn't have wuz curb service.

I think zentner's turned into "zentner's daughter" but I ain't been there. Keep in mind, my memory hole is stuck in the 1961>1964 timeframe! I wuz last on the ground in sanang in 2000 as a best man inna wedding.
