Does my Scout already have some lift?

After looking at pictures of other scouts and reading how much lift people are using for certain sized tires, I'm wondering if I already have a short lift on here. I've got 30" tires, what do you think?

Ok, good. I want a little more, so I'm glad I won't be getting into a lot of lift.

I'm just a little surprised at how much lift people seem to be adding just to get 32" tires or so. Isn't that what you have on yours Robert, with almost 4" of lift?

I have 30's on there now, and it's not like the tires are jammed in. I'd think I could put 31's with no lift at all. 32's would only add 1" above the axle. Maybe it's the extra width in wheelwell that gets you...

I'm used to dealing with full size pickups, where 4" of lift will get you from 31's to 35's.

Two things to remember about tire sizing. Not all are as they read. I put 29.5" tires on this Scout (pep boys) when I got it and they measures like 28" in diameter not counting the squish at the pavement. The picture attached is with those tires and without the 3/4 added shackle lift(1 1/2 longer shackel).

My existing combo is 16 x 8 wheels and what amounts to 32.5 10.5 x 16 tires. They measure 32.5 dia.

Got to say that another inch lift would be nice. After I do my poor mans high steer I May look into that extra bit of lift.

If you go with 15" wheels a 32.5 x 10.5 tire is hard to find. And 12.5 is to wide for the stock fa.... Imo

Remember bigger tires you might have change your gearing dependent on what gearing you have in there

You betcha. If I didn't have 4.88's I would be in for a new gear set. With the od engaged in 3rd I cruise ar 2650 rpm at 68 mph. Still gets behind the porwe curve on hils so back it 3rd straight and I can pull just about any freeway hill at 65 and 3300 rpm.

Does well of road with the 4.88's

Here is a shot of my 80 with 31 inch tires and stock leafs. It had some extended shackles on it.

This is with an alcan 4" lift, and I did a high steer on the stock d27 front diff. The 31 inch tires are as big as I would want to go with the 4.27 gears.

And the next one is a pic of my '69 800a with sii d44's and a 4" Rough Country sii lift. I had to fab some spring perches and move everything. I moved the front diff ahead 2.5 inches and installed the sii powersteering box with a hydroboost. Those are 37" inch superswamper iroks and the way it sits I haven't trimmed any wheelwells as of yet but it will definately need some trimming after I get it finished.

The alcan 4" lift is the way to go, it is a real nice set of leafs and work very good. They don't come with much for the price but after seeing a Rough Country kit compared to the alcan makes me think I should have bought an alcan for the 800a. Actually I think the alcan springs are the only ones out there for the early scouts. Just little things like teflon sliders and clamps, along with diamond cut ends on each leaf. The Rough Country doesn't have any of that. Also after buying two sets of welfare shocks, I would get the bilsteins right away, more cost but cheaper down the road and a way bettter shock.
