Howdy,
I'm scratching my head over the dmv's horrible website, it manages to help in no way at all, but maybe they want it that way. If I buy a truck with back fees in CA and part it out, scrap the rest, do I have to put the title in my name? And if so does that mean I have to pay the penalties? Seems like a policy that would keep clunkers in the system longer....:icon_question:
 
Hey ron, I posted a thread awhile back on transferring vin numbers in basic tech. I recently bought a 79 body/frame to swap to my 74 Scout II. Long story short if you scrap the frame you can do whatever you want to with the parts per chp's vin officer. The frame actually determines the year of the vehicle. I found a nice ralley Scout here local but in order to get the title I would have had to pay the back dmv fees, over $800. In my case. Danny
 
I haven't done it myself. But I am aware of a complete newer Scout or other manufacturer, that was inspected and re-weighted and then registered as a 75-older. Not sure exactly how it was done. New California vin plates revetted to frame and left door a-piler.
 
Hey scooter, I went across the street to our local chp office and had their vin officer look at my 74. I told him what I was doing with the 79 body swap and he looked at the data plate on the right door post and the sticker on the left door post. As long as I "did not have the title" and destroyed the frame (which was pretty much done by the tree it hit) the tub and it's various pieces were just parts. The frame's vin has to match the body vin. You can get reproduction paper stickers through body shops, dealers etc. If a vehicle has a full frame, that determines the year of the vehicle. And yes I'm going to remove the data plate from the 74 and pop rivet it on the 79. Which is what the vin officer said to do. He does want to verify the vin no. On the frame of the 74 before I actually install the 79 body. Hope this clears up some of the mud. Danny
