Where could I get a diverter valve for 1979 scoutii 345 with ac I have looked on the parts store but na

The air injection diverter valve is located on the back of the air injection pump " smog pump" and is part of the emission's system. What ive been told is that it bleeds of air from vacuum produced through the carb to increase or decrease air injection to the exhaust manifold ??

Smog system -- but I am not sure which one --

there is a valve "on top of the log" (each side) which supplies air to the "heads"

and

there is the "valve" (plastic / metal) that "sits" on the back of the smog air pump -- "splits" the output of the pump into two hoses which run to the valve on the log on each side of the head.

I think this valve is different for different years (and "type" -- Scout / full size).

The two outlets are positioned differently on the valve / pump itself based on "hose plumbing / routing".

If you need this valve, it would be best to post a picture of your existing one, so that the correct one can be supplied.

Not sure, but I think only used ones areavailable...

Ok I understand I will get the photos as soon as possible I have a 78 sii my lil brother just picked up a clean og 79 sii and has been asking for help his has this d valve problem thanks.

The various a.I.r. System diverter valves (aka "gulp" valve) will vary somewhat depending upon platform/model year/engine size/etc. For all ihc-produced systems. Same for the egr valve. Because those parts were all "color-coded" back in the day when they were available from the dealership and aftermarket, one had to know exactly which one was needed if being replaced. Parts such as these were actually swapped around on the original vehicle at the point of manufacture when final emissions testing was done on the hot rollers as the rig came off the assembly line. That insured that each vehicle (not just one design series) achieved target emissions numbers for certification purposes on the rollers and when the vehicle was delivered by the selling dealer to the purchaser/end user.

And on the replacement parts side, all these emissions-related parts had to be backed by the 50,000 mile emissions warranty scenario forced in by the feds.

However...in the aftermarket, normally only one or maybe two "parts" were available as replacement items due to specific calibrations. And 30+ years later...there is no market for the ihc-version of this stuff so those parts have been dropped from warehouse inventory.

Just this past summer I needed two gulp valves for two a.I.r. Pumps (yes, those use a dual a.I.r. System) onna m/y '89 454 chev p-30 chassis motorhome. There was a time when those retailed for around $35 each...if you can find 'em today you are looking at $375++!

The other difference in these items besides calibration is their mounting orientation. You can many times simply find a valve for some other app that is very close or the orientation of the various plumbing components and can be worked around by using molded hoses hanging on the wall at the parts house if "appearance" is an issue regarding the smognazis.

The actual air pump and valve combo was sourced from the rochester division of GM back in the day. So look at some combos for GM schnizz as used on b/o/p and chev.

I know exactly what it is but you wrote that you had ac so I didn't make the connection.

"the air injection diverter valve" this makes it clear.

Thanks Mike so I guess as I understand could remove this part and match it up with many GM old ones and May get lucky?? Ok I sure am glad mines a 78 Scout unlike my brothers 79 with a cat conv ??

Yep...but don't toss any cash down the rathole yet...I might have just the item you need in my stash...but it's too dam cold (and dark) to go out and find it. Gimme 24 to look through several of my treasure chests tomorrow and I'll get back to ya on this thread.

I bet what yawl are needin' to do is..."make it smog"??? If so all that stuff can be set up inna "quickchange" fashion if ya know what I mean so it don't rot away when the rig is restin' longterm.

Thanks micheal yea I will get some pitchures and at least part # to help identify config but im sure you will pull a rabbit out of your hat :) ;)

I have a couple of functional gulp valves, one is from a 345/Scout II pump, the other is off my personal 392-powered peekup.

Both have been tested for functionality. This can't be done using a mityvac as there is a "delay" designed into the actuation scenario. To test ya either need a constant manifold vacuum signal...or in my case, I use a bench-mounted 120vac electric vacuum pump as used in hvac work.

Neither of the a.I.r. Pumps I have are functional...typical of pumps that had belts removed and then allowed to sit...that ends up with 'em seizing due to lack of rotation.

If you want one, send me your mail-to addy to :

rodelizrd@gmail.com

And I'll send one out.

No charge, just extend a similar courtesy to someone else in need in the future! We'll nail ya for some cash once ya need a big ticket item!

Fwiw a.ir. Pumps:

I purchased a replacement reman'ed a.I.r. Pump for my 73 t/a as a spare a few months ago.

I have not directly "matched" it to the one on the engine, but it looks correct -- have to swap the pulley and diverter valve.

Since the parts store had it in stock, I have to assume that it fits a good number of 70's GM vehicles.

It is in a federated box, but it was reman'ed by cardone -- not one of the most reliable from what I gather.

Assume you could find one via napa...

All you guys are the best I really appreiciate everyones help and now with both me with my 78 Scout 345 4sp and my brothers 345 ac auto rallye we will drive our scouts proudly as they deserve thanks everyone

Great! That's one less rig that the smognazis won't be sending to the crusher!

Here's payback...mobilize all sane folks in the state and have them vote for no incumbent through the next two election cycles. Every career pol ends up unemployed like the rest of us.

Let every newly-elected "rookie" politico know they will force through the rolling exemption for this smog shit on all vehicles mfd. Before 1984 and ban the use of e10 fuel forever.

We can do this! It's time to revolt!

You bet I will start rallying right away?? You know that the chevron richmond refinery has been harrased by the epa and the city of richmond to the point that they said that they will close down there 108 year old refinery!! Just like that when will they learn to stop running biz out of the country??

I've been following that chevron cluster fark for years! We lived in el sobrante right above san pablo dam and I could see the vapors rising when the wind wasn't blowin'! Made me real homesick for west texas!

There is one big reason amongst many slightly lesser reasons why we abandoned kalifornikate, can ya guess????

I always thought..."richmond is the hell hole second only to oakland",...when wwii wound down, richmond was done for and left for the scavengers and gangbangers. And of course, el sobrante is "extra-territorial" and beholden to richmond. All that "redevelopment" down in the flats near the old Ford plant and ihc warehouse and ferry landing was justa typical socio-politico chicago-style boondoggle.

So the very thought that richmond will slice their own throat over chevron and bleed out is very appropriate don'tcha think??? But then they been bleedin' since 1946!!!!

I always took visitors from all over the world that came to hang with us to richmond first to see the backside of hell, then to berzerkely for a ride up telegraph, and then over to the castro in "the city". Then out to alcatraz if we could get tickets. That kinda burst their bubble about the barbery coast!

When ya put all that worthless shit together, it makes the need to "smog" this old junkiron kinda insignificant! So let's make the politicos insignificant also!

I too lived in el sobrante before I bought my home here in fairfield I lived right on the dam rd two light before the dam?? You sure are right dont know whats wrong with them fools??:cornut:
