desperate! man. trans. shifter won't reinstall

Hi all,
had to replace 2 rear freeze plugs this week, and when taking the clutch out realized my supposedly 6 month old t.o bearing was pretty crunchy, so after a day long ordeal trying to match the bearing finally regreased it. Now, the shifter arm won't go back in properly. It will shift to some degree but it's so loose it will swing from the passenger side to drivers side with no resistance. I have to tow with this tonight or tomorrow! ! I'm all ears for any advice . thanx!!!
 
I did this to mine recently too. It seems to happen when the shifter is removed with it in gear, in my case it was reverse. What I did was to remove the top of the transmission and align all 3 shifter gates to neutral. Once this was done all worked as it's supposed to.
